OCTOBER
MEETING🐝

October 16th, 7:30pm
3017 Hanover Avenue

This month’s guest speaker is beekeeper, educator and pharmacist Jody Conway. Jody is the owner of Uptown Girls Honey and the co-owner of Dandelion Springs Apiary. Jody will be speaking about scarcity of bees and what we can do in the Museum District to help repopulate.

Jody makes health and beauty products, such as soaps, salves, tinctures and candles from the products from the hive using high quality ingredients and no artificial colorants or preservatives. She gardens and manages the Apiary without the use of harsh chemicals, such as Roundup or pesticides.

Dandelion Springs Apiary offers lots of different types of educational adventures from family friendly seminars, to workshops on hand crafting salves, pollinator friendly gardening, wreath making, beekeeping, mead making, and more! They also offer school field trips, community service hours, as well as In-Hive Sessions for those curious about seeing inside of the beehives.

We are excited to meet Jody and are looking forward to becoming better educated on how we can help!

💫⭐️ Featured Board Member ⭐️💫
Communications Chair,
Tara Peyton-Burgess
Where have you lived besides Richmond?

I grew up in Petersburg and Colonial Heights. I’ve also lived in Machrihanish, Scotland and spent a few years living on the Outer Banks. I returned to the tri-cities area where I lived for 25 years before moving to Richmond 3 years ago.

How did you come to call the Museum District home?

When I met my husband 23 years ago, he was living in Richmond. We both worked in the tri-cities area and decided it would be easier to raise our family closer to our jobs. We always said we would move to Richmond as soon as we became empty nesters, and that’s exactly what we did!

Tell us a little about your career path.

Following high school, I danced professionally at Kings Dominion in the main stage shows “Celebration” and ”Gotta Dance”. While I was a performer, I received my BS in Recreation along with a minor in Dance from Radford University. A year later, I returned to school to obtain my certification in Elementary Education and taught 1st and 2nd grades for 13 years. I decided to combine my teaching experience with my love of dance and opened a dance studio. Gotta DANCE! School of Performing Arts is in its 16th season. I have been a dance educator to hundreds of students over the years. I feel extremely blessed to be sharing my passion with so many.

What is your favorite part of the Museum District?

My favorite part of the Museum District is the people! I love my neighbors, my church, and I love spending time with the women in the MDWC. Every day is a new adventure for me!

What is your favorite thing to do in Richmond?

My favorite thing to do in Richmond is to go to performances, festivals and concerts. I love the different venues Richmond has to offer. Some of my favorites are the TheatreLAB, Richmond Triangle Players, Dogwood Dell and Brown’s Island.

Tell us about your hobbies and interests.

I love trying out new restaurants with my husband and our two sons. The fact that we can walk to most of them, makes it even better. I enjoy swimming and playing tennis. I love taking dance classes (especially tap) and seeing shows in NYC and go as often, as I can. It’s my Disney World!
