Update; 17 October 2019

Beginnner's run leads

We are shortly going to organise the January 2020 beginners' courses and wondered if anyone was interested in being a beginners run lead?

We would put you with an experienced run lead for the first course, so you see how it is done - there's no being dropped in at the deep end!

It requires 10 weeks commitment but the rewards are endless...

If you are interested please email beginners@redwayrunners.com or see Annette or Martin at any club run.

Track's even better

As you know we hold a regular weekly track session during the winter at the Stantonbury Track on Wednesdays, meeting at 6.15pm.

The Committee have now agreed that from now on this session will be free each week (we had been charging £1 for members and £3 for guests)

Guests are still welcome, but like the rest of the club you can try us for two weeks and then if you like join (so in effect you could do two free track sessions to try, joining is just £5 for the year to the 31 March)

So even better reason to give track a try

More information on Redway Runners at the track at:

http://www.redwayrunners.com/track-with-redway-runners/

Run Finder

We have a new updated feature on the club website with a 'Run Finder' So if you are not sure which run to try or want to try a different run, have a look, you select the pace you want from the drop down at the top and it will suggest runs that might be suitable for you to try.

Just go to our weekly runs page and click the 'Run Finder' button at: http://www.redwayrunners.com/weekly-runs/

Many thanks to Simon Bull for all the work in developing this for us.

If you have any feedback on the tool drop us a mail to rr@redwayrunners.com

Christmas party update

This year's Christmas party will be on Friday 6 December. There will be 100 tickets for the dinner and the usual disco only option.

We are still waiting for menus and prices from David Lloyd, as soon as we have these, tickets will be available

Obesity workshop and support

Last week I (Martin) took part in a Forum in Aylesbury on Tackling inequalities through physical activity and sport, answering questions, following this had the mail below from Laura and she is looking for our help, sadly I cannot attend the session but Annette is attending for the club and we are looking for anyone who  may have struggled with their weight or have strong opinions about the local environment and weight, especially those who are currently doing our beginners groups or have been on a beginners course
---
I was at the Leap forum yesterday and was really impressed with your talk about the Redway Runners, as a former member of a ‘scary’ running club I think what you have done to encourage beginners is phenomenal- I was so impressed.

My name is Laura and I work in Public Health leading on tackling obesity across Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes.  On the 19th November we are putting on a workshop for stakeholders who’s work has the potential to reduce obesity. I am really keen to invite some local people who may have struggled with their weight or have strong opinions about the local environment and weight. I wondered if you could help me to invite some of your beginner runners who may feel strongly about what local government could do to change the local environment or to support people to maintain a healthy weight.

I feel like running a stakeholder workshop is  all well and good but without a local perspective from residents it is slightly lost..

I have included the link to the invitation, please let me know if you would like to attend and also if you have any ideas about engaging residents.

parkrun Road Trip - Wendover Woods parkrun

Our next Redway Runners parkrun road trip will be to Wendover Wood parkrun on Saturday 30 November, we will aim to get a big green photo near the start at 8.50am. The parkrun is at Wendover Woods, Forestry Commission, Chilterns Office, Upper Icknield Way, Aston Clinton, Aylesbury, HP22 5NF

We have also arranged it so the Saturday Trail Finder run will also start not too far away at 10.15, so another option for those coming along

Redway Runners on-line

Pleased to let you know that Matt Clements has agreed to look after on-line activity for the club going forward and will be attending future club committee meetings

Matt is taking over from Jamie, thank you Jamie for all the work on the club web site especially building our current site and sorting a whole host of issues and problems behind the scenes over the years.

Cross Country Ready for Match 2

Already planning for our next match on Saturday 9 November at Teardrop Lakes.

If you wish to run and have not already registered please email Katie or James on Katie.tucker89@gmail.com or jamesdown1986@me.com with your name, DOB and EA number, you just need to wear your club green top

Stephen Scott and Douglas Yabsley always do an AMAZING job at hosting our RR area by putting up the tent, supplying us with hot tea and coffee and packing it away after. (Thank you to those that always offer to help too)! Please can we ask for some help for this match both putting up and at the end of the day? just let Stephen or Douglas know if you can help for the next match or reply to this mail and will forward on. We often take this luxury for granted so big thank you to the Yabsley’s and Steve for this.

Also the league has asked that each team supplies a marshal point at least one match. Ours is conveniently at one of the MK matches - Teardrops. Can we please have some volunteers to marshal the course? If we have a handful of volunteers it means we can rotate throughout the day and one person doesn’t need to do it all day! Team work. Let us know if you can help.

If you raced before. That number is now yours and you can bring it to every match, or you have to pay an admin fee of £3 for a replacement

Excited to see an even bigger turn out for round 2!

Oxford Cross Country, Match 1

Great attendance at Match One of this seasons Chiltern League Oxford.

Next event is at Tear Drop Lakes, Milton Keynes 9 November let’s fill the start line with green.

Great running all, more info at:
http://www.redwayrunners.com/events/cross-country/

Chiltern League said 'We hope that you enjoyed yesterday’s racing at Oxford. A big thank you to John Exley and all his helpers for delivering the course yesterday, thanks also to the Clubs who supplied extra marshals it made a big difference. Results are now up on the website for you to check out, any queries to Mick Bromilow please. Don’t forget to keep your numbers for all the races this season, otherwise replacements will cost £3 and cause the organisers a lot of work!'

Photos from Oxford are available for U17 races and older courtesy of Barry Cornelius at www.oxonraces.co.uk please give Barry the credit if you use any. A quick reminder to put a Red Cross across your number if you do not wish your photo to appear. Barry does not take photos of the younger age groups.

We will hopefully see you all at Teardrop Lakes in Milton Keynes on 9 November when we are joined by the British Cross Challenge, the RAF and Oxford University.

Been asked to pass this on to see if anyone can help, please note do not know the person, looks genuine but...
---
Hello,

I am a PhD researcher at the University of Essex and am writing to invite members of Redway Runners to participate in some research that I am conducting.  My research investigates the relationship between participation in green exercise (physical activity whilst in the presence of elements of nature) and depressive symptoms in the UK adult general population.  This research is important to understand if green exercise can be used as a healthcare intervention for people with depressive symptoms.

Participation in this research involves completion of an online survey and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.  The survey asks some questions about the participant, the type of physical activity they like to do and why, and about how they have been feeling recently.  The survey is completed anonymously and participants will not be asked for any information that may identify them.  All responses will be kept confidential and stored securely.  This research has been reviewed and received ethical approval from the University of Essex ethics committee. Further information is available at the link below.

I would be very grateful if you could please share the attached flyer or link below with your members.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by email at cwicks@essex.ac.uk, or my lead supervisor, Dr Leanne Andrews at landre@essex.ac.uk

Thank you very much for your help with my research.

Kind regards,

Redway Runners Virtual challenge 2019

Codebreaker challenge

This September sees the 80th anniversary of Bletchley Park opening and we thought this would be worth commemorating by making it the basis of our next Redway Runners ‘challenge’

I’m sure most of us know about the codebreaking activity that took place on site which was instrumental in helping the Allies win WW2 - This is your chance to try your hand at cracking codes to earn yourself some fantastic bling!

Now I know you’re all thinking that this sounds a bit difficult but in reality, this is so simple that children will be able to assist…… in fact this is positively encouraged to make it an educational as well as a fun challenge

So what do you have to do?

  • Firstly make your own enigma machine….. don’t worry full instructions will be provided!
  • Enter the challenge to receive your first code to crack
  • Take a photo of yourself at the location that is revealed and send it to us to receive your second code
  • There are 4 in total to solve to earn a fantastic medal and make some money for charity at the same time
  • We will then have a special (optional) run from a secret location where you will be awarded your medal to wear with pride….. and of course, demonstrate to your friends how clever you are

If you fancy getting involved to make some money for our charity and to bring alive a fantastic piece of local history, then sign into your Redway Runners Love Admin account, select 'event' and enter the challenge....
