National Coaches Symposium Follow Up

Hello all:

For your update: The National Coaches Symposium in the Twin Cities was a great learning opportunity for our community. It was great to see many of you there. If you missed the symposium, maybe you can catch some of the Live Stream. I would recommend that any time you have the time and resources to attend these bi annual national symposiums you take advantage of them. Coach Fish does a great job putting together an informative program and you should leave feeling like you learned some new important information.

Over the next few updates, I’ll share some nuggets from my notes:

Brit Baldishol from the Norwegian Ski Federation presented to the group on Norway’s “development stairs”. One thing from her talk that I found thought provoking was her take on what are attributes that the best developing cross country skiers possess. Here are her bullet points on the subject:

  • They like to be active;
  • They are motivated to improve;
  • They have “talent”, not necessarily the most talent, but have met a certain talent standard;
  • They have access to a good framework or environment to nurture their talents and provide them good conditions to thrive in;
  • They have good parents who are supportive and active themselves;
  • They have good friends and siblings who are also supportive and active;
  • They have local “heros” to watch and follow for inspiration, motivation and mimicry;
  • Their school situation is supportive; and
  • They are the best at training properly at the right levels.

I find these attributes to pretty important as well. Hopefully, this list gives us something to think about and either affirmation of what we are doing or opportunities to improve.

Our next Coaches Education Opportunity is the Wayne Fish Symposium October 18-20 in Rice Lake, WI. This should offer more thought provoking ideas.

We are also adding another half-day coaches clinic in the late afternoon Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Pioneer Midwest Super Fit Weekend.

Keep on seeking to improve your coaching skills, and enjoy the fall colors.
