Upcoming and Ongoing Events

Please keep spreading the word to your friends and family encouraging them to register and apply for an absentee ballot, which is now available to all registered voters.

Getting an Absentee Ballot
Everyone can now vote absentee and vote it early!  Here's how:
Step 1, Request your application to vote absentee from your local county, township, village or city clerk.
Step 2: Complete the application they send you and return it to the clerk or return it in person.
Step 3. Ballots will be mailed out 45 days before the election.  Complete the ballot, follow the directions, sign where indicated and mail it back to the clerk, or in person return it to the clerk's office before the Friday before the elections.

LWVGTA's main fundraising event is our annual wreath sale.  The wreaths are beautiful and reasonably priced.  Wreath sale funds go toward outreach and other activities.

The wreath order form will be sent in a separate email and can be downloaded from our website www.lwvgta.org.
Deadline for ordering wreaths is November 15th!  Order yours soon!

Watch for these future announcements

In January, 2020, we will present a Town Hall Meeting regarding the new changes in voter registration, absentee voting, volunteering for the redistricting commission, and an update on the 2020 Census.

Plans for a 2020 celebration of the founding of LWVGTA 60 years ago are in the works!

In loving memory of two long-time members of LWVGTA:

Peg Kauffman was president of LWVGTA from 1971-1973.  She also served as historian, Voter editor, secretary and on other committees.  Because of her energy, kindness, unassuming manner and her continued involvement in the League affairs she was given the Outstanding Service Award for 2006.

Mary Ann Force died on July 6, 2019.  She was a founding member of LWVGTA in 1960 and one of the first editors of our newsletter.  She was one of four members of the League sued for one million dollars by a conservative TV talk show host Dan Smoot. The newsletter article said his program was "Propaganda against the United Nations, all foreign aid, income tax" and civil rights for minorities.  The article went on to say that the TV program was based on "slanted information, half truths, innuendos, and sometimes worse."  The four members were defended pro bono by a Grand Rapids firm and went to the Supreme Court of the United States.  The case was dismissed on the basis of freedom of speech.

Added note: This case was documented and archived by Peg Kauffman.  Both Peg and Mary Ann were true champions of the League's causes.
LWVGTA along with LWV-Leelanau held another successful Voter Registration Day event at NMC on 9/24 and 9/25/19.  NMC's Student Life organization helped promote it and actively encouraged students to register. Thank you to all our volunteers and Student Life!

9/25/19 TC Mayor and Commissioner Forum

All candidates for all seats were present to speak to an overflow audience in preparation for the November 5th election in Traverse City.  The forum was taped and is available for viewing on Channel 189.  See their schedule on their website or enter "Kevin Essebagger's  Podcast" to find a link.  VOTE411.org is also updated for this election.
One way we make money is to collect Oleson's receipts. Please send your receipts to: Jan Warren,12055 S. Woodwinds Circle #15, Traverse City, MI 49684.
