A message from the President

Dear Members

Welcome to the October Newsletter - it has indeed been a busy couple of months for those on the Committee of the NZWA.  We held a very successful AGM at the Hamilton Airport at the start of September, with some new committee members being voted in and some very good committee members taking a break from the roles they have served in so well.

Attached for you in the this Newsletter are the 2019 AGM minutes and the changes to the Breed Regulations that were passed at the AGM.

I will also introduce to you the new committee - we have a great lineup!

There is a new pricing structure that was approved at the AGM - but don't panic, we have kept things as cheap as we can!

The NZWA are once again supporting the South Island Premier Showing Championships on the 6-8th of December - and this show will again be the NZWA South Island  Showing Champions will be crowned, both under saddle and in hand.  So if you live in the South Island and Showing is your thing - be sure not to miss out.

The big focus from here till November is the exciting Equitana Auction - you can read an update here - what an exciting time to be a breeder / rider / buyer of quality NZ Warmblood Horses!

I wish you all a happy foaling season and can not wait to see the photos and here the reports of them all...

Jody Hartstone,
President, NZWA

Performance Horse Auction - Equitana

This inaugural New Zealand performance horse auction will include select young warmblood stock right through to fully produced elite performance horses and is scheduled as part of the Equitana’s Jumping Day on Saturday, November 23.

The auction list is looking wonderful with some exciting performance horses listed. We are pleased to see breeders and riders supporting the auction with some very superior under saddle sport horses and some gorgeous youngsters.

We will be announcing the auction list shortly, but suffice to say there are many exciting performance warmblood bloodlines represented.

Visit the Equitana website for more information, to submit a horse or to register as a buyer.

Stallion Performance Testing:
(Several small changes were made to this after the 2019 AGM - these are included here)

Along with the new "Star System" the NZWA have introduced, there is also a Performance Testing criteria for stallions.  Although not a compulsory requirement at this stage, this is a stepping-stone to that eventuality and it is envisaged that Performance Testing will become an absolute requirement for any stallion wishing to be licensed with the NZWA after 2025.

The process for how this will look is as outlined below, a stallion would get a ‘temporary license’ to breed after initial licensing, and then be given 12 months to complete the performance criteria relevant to that stallions age.

Dressage -
4yr old Stallion – 70% or higher in 5 official level 1 or 2 dressage tests at a Regional Championship show OR 2 percentages over 75% in an official Young Horse Championship Test in the 4yr old class.

5yr old Stallion – 70% or higher in 5 official level 2 or 3 dressage tests at a Regional Championship show or 2 percentages over 75% in an official Young Horse Championship Test in the 5yr old class.

6yr old Stallion – 67% or higher in 5 official level 3 or higher dressage tests at a Regional Championship show or 2 percentages over 73% in an official Young Horse Championship Test in the 6yr old class.

7yr or older Stallion – 65% or higher in 5 official level 4 or higher dressage tests at a Regional Championship show or 2 percentages over 72% in an official Young Horse Championship Test in the 7yr old class (Stallion must be 7yrs to achieve performance criteria in the Young Horse class).

NB – A young horse Championship Test is one such as National Dressage Championships, Horse Of The Year Young Horse Championship, North Island Future Stars or South Island Future Stars.

Showjumping -
4yr old Stallion – 0.90cm to 1.00m – 4 clear rounds at official ESNZ recognised Showjumping shows OR 2 clear rounds with top 6 placings in the 4yr old show jumping qualifiers or finals.

5yr old Stallion – 1.00m or more – 4 clear rounds at official ESNZ recognised Showjumping shows OR 2 clear rounds with top 6 placings in the 5yr old show jumping qualifiers or finals.

6yr old Stallion – 1.10m or more – 4 clear rounds at official ESNZ recognised Showjumping shows OR 2 clear rounds in the top 6 placings in the 6yr old showjumping qualifiers or finals.

7yr or older Stallion – 1.15m or more – 4 clear rounds at official ESNZ recognised Showjumping shows OR 2 clear rounds with top 6 placings in the 7yr old show jumping qualifiers or finals.

Eventing -
4yr old Stallion – CCN 80 or higher – 3 results in the top 6 placings with no x-country jump penalties (10 time penalties allowed) and no more than one rail and one time penalty in the Show jump phase (5 faults maximum with no refusal allowed)

5yr old Stallion –  CCN 95 or higher – 3 results in the top 6 placings with no x-country jump penalties (10 time penalties allowed) and no more than one rail and one time penalty in the Show jump phase (5 faults maximum with no refusal allowed)

6yr old Stallion – CCN 1.05 or higher - 3 results in the top 6 placings with no x-country jump penalties (10 time penalties allowed) and no more than one rail and one time penalty in the Show jump phase (5 faults maximum with no refusal allowed)

7yr or older Stallion – CCN 1* or higher - 3 results in the top 6 placings 3 results in the top 6 placings with no x-country jump penalties (10 time penalties allowed) and no more than one rail and one time penalty in the Show jump phase (5 faults maximum with no refusal allowed)

Age group and Young Horse classes for Showjumping and Eventing will also be considered as qualifying towards Performance Testing.

The NZWA was very careful to be sure that ALL stallions have the ability to achieve the 2* status, as ultimately, we are a Studbook aiming to create performance horses.  As such, if there is a Stallion  that is unable to achieve the performance testing results himself, he can still prove himself to be a stallion capable of producing great progeny…which is of course, always the goal when standing a stallion!

A Stallion is able to achieve the Performance Test requirements by having 10 of his progeny meet the performance test criteria across any of the disciplines.  But the results must be from progeny that are registered with a breed association that has a system that fully evidences the breeding and age of the progeny and that is acceptable to the NZWA.  The onus on providing proof of these results is on the stallion owner, NOT the NZWA.
