1. Updates

Hello urbanists! This week we're bringing you news on liberating pissoirs, events from Banbury Road to Indonesia, opportunities to submit papers on technology, water, and climate resilience... and much more.
We are delighted to bring you 'Customer Bora: Promoting Circular Economy Through Youth Empowerment in Kenya' . an interview piece with the founder of Customer Bora, Juliani. Through conversation, Lubna Elmahdy takes a closer look at this innovative initiative, which works to reduce the burden of single-use plastics and waste by using a circular economy framework.
In your second must-read article of the week, Lubna Elmahdy joins Derrick Ngala as they reveal how Sub-Saharan Africa is home to some of the most innovative waste management projects in the world. From transforming wastewater into drinking water to making roads out of plastic, several African countries have ignited the spark to change the narrative, 'Shifting a Mindset: Seeing Waste as a Resource'.

As always, please do send in your pictures and work -  we'd love to feature them in our newsletter. Head over to Facebook, Twitter, and our website pages for more updates.

  • Pissoirs and public votes: how Paris embraced the participatory budget (The Guardian)
    • I am assuming that if, like me, French is not your first language, and the word 'pissoir' somehow sounds vaguely majestic to you, that is what will draw you to this one. However, urinals aside, Megan Clement focuses here on much more important things - on how Parisians can now propose ideas for, and vote on, what 5% of the city’s budget will be spent on every year... But fine, click on the link because of the pissoirs, I won't judge you.
  • Walk the talk: Cities urged to study footpaths for better land use (Place)
    • Tracking footprints in the snow isn't just a hobby reserved for old school detectives. The imprints can be symptomatic of a range of urban issues, as well as clues to improving the lives of city-dwellers. Carey L. Biron explains how.
  • Traffic Study Comes Under Fire for Being Too ‘Pro-Car’ (Streets Blog USA)
