We are proud to be a part of a brand new citywide mental health and wellbeing service which launched this year on World Mental Health Day – 10th October. 

Community Roots is a network of 16 organisations providing services and resources to support mental health across Brighton & Hove. The network is led by Sussex-based housing, care and support organisation Southdown.

TDC will be working together with the Hangleton & Knoll project to deliver and facilitate services that improve the mental health and wellbeing of people from local BAME communities. We’ll be particularly focusing on those who have limited access to community mental health services, those living in areas of greatest socio-economic need, and those coming from high-risk communities such as refugees and migrants.

The freephone service is available on 0808 196 1768 and is open Monday to Friday between 9am to 5pm. Callers will be given help to navigate and access relevant services.

The Trust for Developing Communities, along with ONCA & MakerClub Brighton are delighted to have been awarded support by Curiosity (co-funded by Children In Need and Wellcome Trust) to run Curiosity Club, a three year science engagement project with young people in East Brighton, starting in autumn 2019.

Many of you may already be aware that on Friday 21^st September there was a fire on Pankhurst Ave. The fire damaged one block of 12 households and, due to safety checks, has displaced another 10 households. The response from the local residents has been incredible, with them, along with the Community Development worker, supporting those affected by the fire by keeping the local community centre open and offering comfort and friendliness at a very difficult and distressing time. They also have organised a Go Fund Me fundraising page, and planned and received practical donations including clothes, food and toiletries. The residents affected by the fire have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity shown by their local community and the wider Brighton and Hove community.

Help needed for the Portslade food bank.

The Purple People Kitchen foodbank in Portslade is looking for volunteers to collect the food donations they are offered. You would need a car and be available for a couple of hours during the week to make the collections for this high profile foodbank.

The Purple People Kitchen serves a hot meal and gives out the food parcels every Friday 12 -2pm at Portslade Town Hall but it is the work behind the scenes leading up to this weekly event that is vital. Student volunteers needed. 

We are partnering with our local universities to offer students the opportunity to volunteer on projects that will enable BAME communities to take ownership of their health, and to improve their wellbeing.

There are two projects needing volunteers:

Tarner Multicultural Group – Wellbeing and Community Roots – Mental Health.

We are looking for students with knowledge and experience of BAME communities, particularly on challenges and opportunities they face when it comes to improving their health and wellbeing.
