Welcome to the Point Park CMI newsletter

The Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University serves as a laboratory for the present and future of journalistic storytelling. With that in mind, we want to let you know about what we’re doing at the Center, about upcoming events and about issues affecting journalism.

We hope to see you at a future event, like the Media Innovators Speakers Series, Dis/Ability Symposium, or High School Media Day, details about which are all below. Maybe you've visited us at 305 Wood Street for the recent Right-To-Know Law workshop or Doris O'Donnell Innovations in Investigative Journalism Fellowship announcement, but if you missed them, we have recapped them below too.

Media Innovators Speakers Series brings NPR veterans' correspondent to Playhouse

Join us for the next Media Innovators Speakers Series featuring NPR's Quil Lawrence at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Highmark Theatre of the Pittsburgh Playhouse.

A New York-based correspondent for NPR News, Quil Lawrence covers veterans’ issues nationwide. He won a Robert F. Kennedy Award for his coverage of American veterans and Gracie Award for coverage of female combat veterans. He covered Iraq and Afghanistan for 12 years, serving as NPR’s Bureau Chief in Baghdad and Kabul.

CMI collaborative journalism initiative announces project editor

Bridge Pittsburgh Media Partnership is pleased to announce AmyJo Brown will serve as the collaboration’s founding project editor. A Pittsburgh native, AmyJo has an extensive background as a journalist. Learn more about her – and the project – here.

Office of Open Records director answers questions about RTK law

Erik Arneson, director of the Pennsylvania Office of Open Records, led a workshop Oct. 1 on the state's Right-To-Know law that governs the public record requesting process. About 25 professionals, including journalists and grant-writers, attended. Arneson explained that the law has not been updated since it was enacted in 2009 and is optimistic about SB 783.

Off The Record offers sneak peek

Ahead of the Oct. 3 performance, Off The Record brought some notable names and belly laughs to the CMI for a press conference. Every year since 2001, News Guild of Pittsburgh and SAG-AFTRA Ohio-Pittsburgh members perform a musical satire about the region's headlines, which has raised more than $600,000 for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Like their Facebook page for updates about next year.

On Media: The answer to saving local journalism lives in us

Erica Hensley of Mississippi Today is the winner of the inaugural $20,000 Doris O’Donnell Innovations in Investigative Journalism Fellowship from the Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University.

Hensley, health/data reporter and Knight Foundation Fellow at Mississippi Today, proposed a project that about how Mississippi handles the threat of lead poisoning.

“Erica’s project fulfills the mission of the Doris O’Donnell Fellowship by focusing on a critical public health issue in areas of Mississippi that have little or no local news coverage," said CMI Director Andrew Conte.

Register now for High School Media Day on Nov. 1 featuring zombie novel author

Educators, join us with your classroom for Point Park University's semi-annual High School Media Day on Friday, Nov. 1, for a day filled with hands-on workshops hosted by Point Park faculty, students and media professionals. Individual students interested in media are also welcome to attend and can be provided with any necessary proof of attendance.

Our keynote speaker is Lucy Leitner, author of Working Stiffs, a zombie horror-comedy novel. She earned her master's degree in journalism from Point Park in 2010 and received the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence award for a criminal justice retrospective she co-wrote as a graduate student. Leitner also writes and strategizes content and serves as spokesperson for the avant-garde vitamin company LivOn Labs.

“We believe the future is digital. We are maintaining our news department and the quality of the Post-Gazette. We have no plans to cut back our commitment," said Allan Block, chairman of Block Communications.

“This move to offices on the North Shore illustrates our unwavering commitment to providing timely, comprehensive coverage to our Allegheny County audience. There is a hunger for great Pittsburgh-area news and we will be there to deliver it,” said Jennifer Bertetto, president and CEO of Trib Total Media.

City Paper: Pittsburgh's sports journalists aren't just 'sticking to sports'

“There is definitely a line where it can be too much, but I never cross that line. And I don’t hammer away at people with my beliefs day after day after day. Every so often I’ll venture into that world if it is appropriate," said Paul Zeise, radio host on 93.7 The Fan and columnist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

New York Times: The growing threat to journalism around the world

"This isn’t just a problem for reporters; it’s a problem for everyone, because this is how authoritarian leaders bury critical information, hide corruption, even justify genocide. As Senator John McCain once warned, 'When you look at history, the first thing that dictators do is shut down the press,'" said A. G. Sulzberger, publisher of The New York Times, during a talk at Brown University.
