Plant native plants in Hillsdale!

Saturday, October 19, 10am-Noon

Join us on SW Bertha Ct (in Hillsdale Town Center across from the Watershed apartment building) to add native plants (including edible berries!) and remove weeds in this native pollinator hedgerow. This planting area provides critical habitat for birds, bees, and other wildlife, and your help will ensure that it continues to thrive.

Snacks, tools, safety gear, and instruction will be provided. Sign up by simply calling or emailing the Watershed Resource Center (503-823-2862, watershed@swni.org).

Stormwater Stars hosts another successful workshop

Neighbors come together to enhance landscape at Stephens Creek Crossing.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our Stormwater Stars workshop on Saturday, October 5! Twenty volunteers came together to enhance 1200 square feet of landscape area by amending soil and adding 44 NW native plants. We also installed permeable pavers to create pathways between a sidewalk and the entries of six apartments.

This project will greatly help to reduce erosion and mud, which is always great, but is especially beneficial given the location of this project, right at the headwaters of Stephens Creek! We are so grateful to the Stephens Creek Crossing community for their partnership and support of this project, and are looking forward to doing more projects like this in the future.

Mike Houck, world recognized urban naturalist and founder of the Urban Greenspaces Institute and Tom Liptan, expert on ecoroofs and stormwater management, will speak about urban green spaces and why it is so important to have preservation of the wild in our cities.

All are welcome at this FREE event, no RSVP required! For questions or more information, contact the Watershed Resource Center (watershed@swni.org or 503-823-2862)

Sensitive species like the red legged frog rely on small patches of natural space for habitat in our urban areas
No Ivy Day (Saturday, October 26)

Help protect our natural areas from harmful and destructive weeds!

No Ivy Day is a City-wide effort to remove tons (literally!) of invasive English/Irish ivy from our parks and natural spaces. It's a great way to spend some active time outdoors connecting with your neighbors and helping the community. Many work party events are taking place on the westside of Portland.

A full listing of events can be found on the official No Ivy Day website.

Keep a snag, create a home

Snags provide critical habitat to a wide variety of local wildlife.

Snags (dead standing trees) are not very abundant in urban areas because of how they look, and concern that they might fall (though many tree species will continue to stand tall and sturdy for years after they die). If you have a dead tree on your property, consider leaving it for birds and other critters to make into a home.

We recently spotted a northern flicker feeding its babies in a snag at the headwaters of Fanno creek! You can check out the video here.
