Call on Pittsfield City Council to fight puppy mills and protect families

Puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills where puppies and their mothers are kept in filthy stacked wire cages and other deplorable conditions. These cruel factories contribute to pet overpopulation and can cause a lifetime of suffering for dogs and their heartbroken families.

Fortunately, an ordinance has been introduced in Pittsfield that would help end this cruelty. As a Pittsfield resident and animal lover, your voice is crucial.

You can show your support by attending the Ordinances & Rules Committee meeting and asking the committee members to support a ban on the retail sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits in Springfield:

Monday October 7, 2019
7:00 p.m.
Pittsfield City Hall
70 Allen St, Pittsfield

Boston, Cambridge, and Stoneham have already joined the 300+ localities nationwide, along with California and Maryland, that have passed similar laws. It's time we do the same in Pittsfield!

Currently, Massachusetts does not regulate where pet stores source puppies and does little to protect consumers from the risks associated with purchasing puppy mill dogs. The puppies coming from mills often suffer from genetic defects plus illnesses, and can cost unsuspecting owners thousands of dollars in veterinary visits or lead to a lifetime of medical complications. Check out HSUS' Advocate's Guide to Stopping Puppy Mills.

Taking time out of your life to attend a City Council meeting to speak up for animals makes a difference, thank you! You're helping build a more humane Massachusetts.

Want to do more to help? There's state-level legislation pending on puppy mills and pet stores, too. Please take action by making two brief, polite phone calls to your state representative and state senator. (Look up their numbers.)

When you call, you can simply say, "As a constituent who cares about animals and public safety, please support An Act banning the retail sale of cats and dogs in pet shops (S.175, H. 800)."

Best,
Katie
