Funding for Bridge Nets Proposed

New federal legislation, the Barriers to Suicide Act, has been proposed by three U.S. House of Representatives members that would make block grant funding available for physical suicide barriers, such as nets and taller railings, on bridges. "Nationwide, many bridges lack barriers or sufficient safety nets, which are proven to deter suicide attempts and are critical to saving lives," said John Katko (R-Washington), one of the bill's three co-authors. The other two co-authors are Don Beyer (D-Virginia) and Grace Napolitano (D-California).
Pasadena Bridge Fencing

Temporary suicide prevention fencing on Pasadena's Colorado Street Bridge has reduced suicides from the bridge, and now a permanent solution is being sought. Since the bridge was built in 1919, there have been more than 150 suicides from it, including at least 30 in the past 10 years. After the temporary fencing was installed in the spring of 2017, there has been only one suicide. The design firm chosen for the project, Donald McDonald & Associates, helped design the net currently being installed on the Golden Gate Bridge.
Coffee with a Message

Should you be in Chicago and searching for a good cup of coffee, we recommend Sip of Hope. It bills itself as "the world's first coffee shop where 100% of the proceeds support proactive suicide prevention and mental health education ... the perfect space for breaking the silence around suicide and raising the visibility of mental health resources in our community." The shop's primary message, "It's OK Not to Be OK," is printed on T-shirts that can be special ordered in a variety of styles. For more information, visit the company's website.
