Lights on Afterschool 2019

Are you ready? It's almost time to turn the Lights on Afterschool this year! Lights On Afterschool is a national day to celebrate all of the great things happening afterschool. On October 24th, 2019, afterschool programs across the nation will host events inviting community members to experience afterschool first hand. Don't know where an event is happening near you? Check out our listing at the link below to find out where you can go to celebrate! We can't wait to see you there to celebrate the fantastic afterschool programs in our region that keep kids safe, inspire them to learn and help working families. Call for Presenters
Empower 2020 is Pennsylvania's only out-of-school time conference designed to bridge learning and STEM Ecosystems as well as provide networking opportunities for all who work toward the successful future of our children and youth. The conference provides high quality professional development opportunities for afterschool professionals, administrators, youth development workers, community partners, parents, policymakers, and other advocates who work on behalf of children and youth. PSAYDN seeks high quality, effective presentations addressing the latest research and promising practices in supporting children and youth success as well as continuing professional development for professionals. Deadline to apply is Friday October 18th, 2019.

Simple Interactions
Are you a teaching artist looking for an advanced professional development opportunity? APOST and the University of Pittsburgh School of Education are partnering to present the Simple Interactions Leadership Program (SILP). This special six-week experience will help teaching artists identify ways to increase their interactions with youth in OST settings. SILP is hosted in multiple forms and this year's Fall 2019 Cohort will target teaching artists. Teaching Artists deliver unique and creative programming and will bring a unique perspective to SILP. Only 12 participants will be accepted. The application deadline has been extended to October 11thIf you have any questions about the application please contact Debralyn Woodberry-Shaw at diw28@pitt.edu.

It is possible that not all screen time is equally bad for a child's performance at school. A new review of 58 studies from 23 countries found only the time spent watching television and playing video games negatively impacted a child's academics.
