Three Recommended Podcast Episodes Every Humpday

Have you ever forwarded one of my emails to a friend? You lie like a rug. Forward this email to friends and tell them to click on this link to subscribe.
Recently, I was asked for help on two new podcast trailers. One show is coming later this month and the other one hopefully not too far behind that. As an editor at heart, it was fun to listen to these new passion projects. And then shred them to death.

But I’m always curious as to how many people listen to a podcast’s trailer. If someone tells you about a show, without ahem, recommending a specific episode, what’s your m.o? For me, I’m scanning backward reading episode descriptions until I find one that seems compelling. (I could rant about episode descriptions but I won’t.) Tell me yours.

p.s. I was sneakily forced to watch the second half of Frozen this past weekend. Olaf FTW.

p.s.s. Don't forget to track me down if you are going to Sound Education this week/end.

Just Drink It (or Not)

The Skimmer’s Hook: Is water sufficient enough when you are working up that sweet sweat?

Listen if you like: Exercise, Sweating, U of F

When I was a kid living on the tennis courts, we couldn’t get enough of orange Gatorade. I even bought the powdered mix and made it myself. Funny how years later, I now purchase orange powdered mix but it’s to make sure my colon is healthy. Diverticulosis is not your friend. TMI?

When I now have those tough paddle tennis matches, I’m always wondering if I should be drinking something other than water (and beer) to help my body. I don’t have to wonder anymore.

Thanks to reader, BM, for the heads up.

Podcast:  Nutrition Diva - Are Sports Drinks the Best Way to Replace Electrolytes? (13 mins)

Are You Lonesome Tonight?

The Skimmer’s Hook: How can you feel lonely with 9,291 friends? That's not enough.

Listen if you like: People, Buying Things, Elvis

A piece of me feels like you’ve heard this before. The world has changed substantially, a lot due to this ever-connected world we live in. Social media, blah blah blah.

But this episode doesn’t talk about happiness - it speaks of loneliness, depression, and anxiety. In the interview, a survey is mentioned that asked Americans how many close friends they had that they could turn to in a crisis. The most common answer is staggering.

Maybe I’m lucky or just a gift to the world. But it frightens me to find out that people don’t think they have others to turn to. But before you think that a FaceTime call will cure your ills, think again.

Podcast: The Ground Up Show - The Loneliness Epidemic (21 mins)

A Lover Not a Goon

The Skimmer’s Hook: Would you be prepared if you knew someone wanted to kick the crap out of you while a hockey game was going on?

Listen if you like: Fighting, Goons, Preparation

I debated long and hard about recommending this podcast as a main recommendation. Ultimately, you can decide whether you want to listen to something that may not be in your typical wheelhouse. (Hey - If I’m willing to watch Frozen, you can listen to this.)

Awhile back, I recommended a RadioLab episode about John Scott, the hockey enforcer/goon that ended up in the All-Star game. As it turns out, Scott started making his own appropriately named show - Dropping The Gloves.

His first episode talks about how he prepares for a fight that he’s probably going to have during a hockey game. I think it’s fair to say that you’ll be getting some insight about something that hopefully is entirely foreign to you.

As an aside, I have a friend that used to be in the NHL and I heard stories about his fights. None of it makes much sense since I'm a lover, not a fighter.

Podcast: Dropping the Gloves - How Does John Scott Prepare for a Fight? (18 mins)  (Follow the directions under the video player to get to the correct episode.)

Extra Hot Sauce

Have you ever had a good friend that then wasn’t? I’ve been down that road. So has OhItsBigRon. Listen to Bad Person from Time Well Spent to find out if his outcome is better than mine. (21 mins)

Do you use a password manager? I’m a huge proponent of them and not strictly due to security reasons. Learn from this So, Bob minisode if they are safe and if you should be using one. (16 mins)
