Friends of Stone Mountain State Park

Fall Newsletter

Fall Member Hike

On Saturday, November 2nd the Friends of Stone Mountain State Park will host the first annual Fall member hike and gathering!  Meet us at the picnic area at 1pm for a brief meet-and-greet and then join us for a hike!  We will lead at least two different hikes of varying length and difficulty.

If you are not yet a member, you can join at the gathering or learn more about our organization.  Families and leashed dogs are of course welcome!  Bring a snack and water and a raincoat just in case.

We installed information card holders at the main parking lots and the visitor center at the Park.  This should help more visitors know about our organization and ways that they can support Stone Mountain State Park!

Do you have ideas for ways to improve the Park?  Come to our member hike on Nov. 2nd and share your thoughts or email us!

Update on Friends of Stone Mountain SP

We are now officially a 501c(3) non-profit! This means that all donations are tax deductible.  Members can join and make donations directly from our website: www.friendsofstonemountainnc.com , or by mail (see below), or at the donation box in the visitor center of the park.

The Friends of Stone Mountain State Park is organized by a volunteer board.  Come meet us at the first annual Fall Gathering and Hike!  Also, if you think you would be a good candidate to help with our mission, please contact us at our email address to learn more about becoming a board member or a volunteer.

Park Update

We have had several positive meetings and discussions with the park superintendent, Mr. Jeffrey Jones.  He and the park staff are very happy to have our support.  They have  requested that we help with the cost of some education materials for the kids environmental education lessons that they provide each month.

The new re-route of the MST section running from the top of the first Wolf Rock ascent down to the park road across from the backpacking parking area is looking really nice.  This is a 2-mile section that moves the MST off of the park road and through some of the most beautiful parts of the park.  This trail is not yet open, but should be available fairly soon.  The EVTA has worked to create this section.
