Policy Address 2019 Public Consultation

Due to the current situation in Hong Kong, the Unison Policy Address Committee (PAC) decided to call off the petition originally scheduled for 7 October at the Central Government Offices. During the months of July and August, the Unison PAC had organized a few concern groups and collected their views. The various submissions have been uploaded and can be accessed at: http://bit.ly/31XJ8yH. The Chief Executive will announce the 2019 Policy Address on 16 October when the Legislative Council resumes. Unison will closely monitor if policies relevant to the rights of ethnic minorities are in place.

Renaissance College Fundraising

Hong Kong Unison was honored to be selected by the Renaissance College Hong Kong to receive proceeds from the ethnic food sale at its 3rd RCHK International Evening on 23rd September. The annual event was organized to promote racial harmony by bringing different cultures together. Students believe that embracing diversity at RCHK is a way to combat racial discrimination and unite the local community. A variety of fun and talented performances was co-presented by students of different ethnicities. The donation will be used to promote equitable education opportunities for ethnic minority students in local mainstream schools.

Parents focus groups on curriculum review

On 9 September, Unison held focus group discussion with ethnic minority parents regarding the public consultation on the review of primary and secondary school curriculum. We consulted parents on school-based homework policy, communication between ethnic minority parents and schools, and values education. Parents discussed about how identity of ethnic minority students can be explored when curriculum includes national identity. Unison compiled their views and suggestions. Similarly, a focus group discussion with a different group of ethnic minority parents was conducted on 27 September.

Parent Talk

On 12 September, Unison held a school talk at Po On Wan Ho Kan Primary School on “Parents' role in helping children learn better Chinese”. More than 20 ethnic minority parents participated in the interactive talk. They shared their experiences and struggles to teach children Chinese at home. Parents expressed their eagerness to contribute in their children's studies at home and they were very willing to learn new skills. A similar parent talk was conducted on 27 September 2019 at Wanchai Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service to about 20 ethnic minority parents.

School Talk

On 23 September Unison conducted a school talk for about fifty Form Six students at the Hong Kong Taoist Association Yuen Yuen Institute No.3 Secondary School on the topic "Career - Exploration and Pathways". The talk was interactive and activity-based through which students reflected on the suitability of careers in relation to their interests and skills.

Outreach and home visits

Unison outreached at kindergartens, markets, and parks in Jordan. We met ethnic minority parents who were eager to talk to us especially regarding their children's education. Unison supports ethnic minority families in school selection and offers one-to-one home tutor service to ethnic minority children who are in need of help in the Chinese language subject. During September, Unison made one home visit on home tutor matching.

Welcome to intern and job shadows

We have an intern from the University of Hong Kong who is helping us on outreach and research since 25 September. From 24 to 27 September, two Form Four students from Heep Yunn School Work Experience Placement Programme joined Unison to work in the library, indexing books and re-organizing the library shelves.

We are always looking for smart, organized and capable individuals who are passionate about racial justice. If you fit the description, reach out to us for internship or volunteering opportunities!
