State Senate District 13 Candidate Mike Brownrigg Announces Legendary 50th House Party

Brownrigg’s Grassroots Neighborhood State Senate Campaign is halfway to its goal of 100 house parties before the March primary

Burlingame, California – Mike Brownrigg, a leading Democratic candidate for California State Senate in District 13, today announced that he has held his 50th house party as part of his commitment to run an authentic, voter-centered, grassroots campaign. Brownrigg announced in January that he would hold 100 house parties across the district before the March 3rd primary. In addition, as part of his grassroots campaign which is focused on talking directly to voters, Brownrigg has secured over 650 endorsements from around the district. He is committed to going city to city and neighborhood to neighborhood talking to voters about the issues that matter most to them.

“Since beginning this campaign, I have spoken to over a thousand voters face to face, in coffee shops, living rooms and around kitchen tables in almost every city from South San Francisco to Mountain View. I have heard about the challenges Peninsula voters face and their concerns for their communities and neighborhoods. I love talking with and listening to them talk about tackling tough problems, from the affordability and the cost of living crisis to transit, climate change and education. These are not easy issues, but with 30 years of experience making government work for people, including 10 years on the Burlingame City Council and two terms as mayor, they know I get it…and I will get it done in Sacramento.”

“We were proud to be able to share Mike with our guests. Having seen him in action over many years, we know that he has the experience, integrity and temperament to represent us effectively in Sacramento,” said 50th Brownrigg House Party host and San Mateoresident Brenda Sell. “Our friends appreciated being able to have a conversation with Mike about what’s on their minds. As he’s been doing across the district, Mike wowed our friends. We urge you to get to know and vote for Mike.”

Brownrigg’s grassroots campaign launched his house party program in January 2019 and has held gatherings in 21 cities across San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.  His goal is to have 100 house parties, meeting voters in all 25 cities and unincorporated county communities in the district.

“Senator Jerry Hill, who is retiring from this Senate seat, is my role model for the kind of engaged representation voters on the Peninsula deserve,” says Brownrigg. “Jerry has been ubiquitous in our county ever since I became an elected official 10 years ago. I hope to emulate his deep engagement across SD 13.”

Following are a few quotes from others who hosted house parties for Brownrigg.

“I like Mike because in his role as mediator and in his political career, he listens – he thoughtfully listens – and does not just pontificate. He has the experience and temperament to be an effective state senator,” said Mickie Winkler, former mayor of Menlo Park.

“I met Mike through a friend and decided I wanted to introduce him to my friends. It was great having Mike in our home, with friends and neighbors, talking about key issues,” said Suzy Allison, Los Altos resident.  “His lifelong family roots in both Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties means he really understands what is working — and not working — in our communities.  My friends all left impressed...and more optimistic!”

“A friend introduced me to Mike.  He told me that he was running for state senate, because he wanted to work on tough problems.  His sincerity and empathy struck me.  He won my support and I hosted a gathering at my home in Half Moon Bay to introduce him to my coastside friends,” said Sheryl Young, Half Moon Bay resident.  “Faced with pointed questions about issues specific to the coast, Mike displayed a genuine understanding of the unique challenges facing the different communities around the district.  Importantly, we appreciated his position that solutions are nuanced and not one-size-fits-all.”

Brownrigg's campaign for State Senate has over 650 community supporters and a growing list of endorsements from prominent local elected officials, including San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa, South San Francisco City Council Members Mark Addiego and Rich Garbarino, Belmont City Council Member Doug Kim, Hillsborough Mayor Shawn Christianson, Council Members Jay Benton, Marie Chuang and Alvin Royse, San Carlos Council Mayor Mark Olbert, Burlingame Mayor Donna Colson and Vice Mayor Emily Beach, Burlingame Council Members Ann Keighran and Ricardo Ortiz, San Mateo Councilman Joe Goethals, San Bruno Council Members Marty Medina and Laura Davis, Half Moon Bay Mayor Deborah Penrose and former mayor "Farmer John" Muller, Foster City Mayor Sam Hindi and former Foster City Mayor Charles Bronitsky, and former County Supervisor John Ward, along with dozens of other leaders from every corner of the district.

Brownrigg is one of the top fundraisers in the race of five candidates. His campaign ended the financial reporting period with a total of $460,000 in contributions.

Brownrigg is a 10-year Burlingame City Council Member, two-term Mayor and served eight years on the Planning Commission. Under his leadership, Burlingame expanded child and senior care, added more affordable housing and opened new parks and schools. Prior to elected office, Brownrigg worked as a congressional aide for Democratic U.S. Rep. Howard Berman and served in the executive branch as a diplomat in the Foreign Service. Professionally, Brownrigg is a partner in a social impact investment firm that helps improve underserved communities around the world. He and his wife, Marty, a pediatrician, live in Burlingame where they are raising their four children. Mike's a problem solver and consensus builder who is focused on addressing key issues facing state senate district 13 and California. He was among the first to shine a light on the affordability crisis affecting families in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. He knows too many families are forced to choose between health care and a roof over their heads. That's why he'll fight to solve the affordability crisis by expanding housing options, bring down the cost of childcare and health care and expand four-year public university choices in our area to keep our kids learning and working here. He'll work to ensure California remains a leader on climate change and waste reduction.
