New Chestnut Ridge Visitors Center opens at the Spallation Neutron Source
Starting October 7, users and visitors of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) can pick up badges and dosimeters at the Chestnut Ridge Visitors Center. The Chestnut Ridge Visitors Center is located at the SNS Office Building 8600, Room J-205 on the second floor next to the User Office and Lounge. The Chestnut Ridge Visitors Center will be open from 7:30 a.m.–4 p.m.

Webinar: First Experiments at the SNS Second Target Station
A webinar, First Experiments at the SNS Second Target Station, will be held at 1 p.m. (EST) Wednesday, October 16, 2019. The webinar will highlight experiments outlined in the First Experiments at the Spallation Neutron Source Second Target Station report. This webinar is the second of three webinars preceding the Science at Second Target Station Workshop December 9–10, 2019.

The Second Target Station (STS) at SNS will provide an unprecedented peak flux brightness of cold neutrons for neutron scattering measurements. Initial experiment themes have been developed to take advantage of this high flux of cold neutrons at a pulsed neutron source. These will be presented in the context of several archetypal experiments.

Save the Date: Science at the Second Target Station Workshop December 9–10
|
|
ORNL has recently established a project office to further develop and ultimately build the STS at SNS. This is an exciting time for neutron scattering in the United States, as STS will provide transformative new capabilities that both complement and greatly extend our current resources for neutron scattering. ORNL and the SNS-HFIR User Group (SHUG) will host the Science at the Second Target Station Workshop December 9–10, 2019, at ORNL in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This workshop will facilitate discussion of the opportunities enabled by STS across current and prospective future scientific fields.
Scientists of all disciplines, from beginners to experts, interested in the STS project and in the new capabilities it will enable are invited to ORNL in December. This workshop is a critical step in the STS project. It will lead to identification of the essential performance parameters of a prospective suite of instruments and to the formation of teams that will continue to refine the science case and participate in defining the requirements for individual instruments to be built at STS.

SNS-HFIR User Group Executive Committee nominations due October 25, 2019

The call for nominations for new members of the SHUG Executive Committee (SHUG EC) is open. Three regular members (3 year term), and one graduate student or post-doc (2 year term) will be elected for the term starting in January 2020.
|
|
|
A nominee must have been a named principal investigator or team member on proposals submitted to the Neutron Sciences Directorate’s (NScD’s) Integrated Proposal Tracking System (IPTS) in the current or preceding year. SHUG EC members are expected to devote time to fulfilling their duties and responsibilities. They are expected to participate in a monthly hour-long teleconference, advocate on behalf of users and the neutron sources, and work with the ORNL neutron scattering program to organize workshops, webinars, and the annual User Meeting.
Send your candidate’s name, affiliation, and email, and a short (100–200 word) biographical sketch to the SHUG EC Vice Chair Dr. Martin Mourigal, at mourigal@gatech.edu, by October 25, 2019. This information will be included as part of the ballot for voting by the entire SHUG community. Self-nominations are accepted. A Message from the SNS-HFIR User Group Executive Committee

Dear fellow neutron scatterers: The STS is on the horizon and constant improvements are implemented to the current HFIR and SNS facilities. The SHUG EC takes this opportunity to encourage active communication and exchange of ideas between the neutron scattering community and ORNL. The purpose of the SHUG is to (1) provide a formal and clear channel for the exchange of information and advice between neutron investigators and SNS and HFIR management, (2) serve as an advocacy group for neutron scattering at SNS and HFIR, and (3) provide a communication channel among users of SNS and HFIR.

The SHUG EC is looking for feedback from you regarding your experience with and possible improvements to neutron instruments, software systems, sample environments, or any other aspect of your experience as a neutron scatterer at ORNL. The SHUG EC is also seeking broad input on possible neutron science advancements that will be enabled by the STS. Anyone who is interested in expressing concerns or ideas is welcome to contact any of the members of the SHUG EC.

Proposal call allocation for the upcoming cycle
|
|
|
The proposal call for beam time at ORNL‘s SNS closed September 18, 2019. SNS received a total of 613 instrument beam time requests in 574 proposals. Award notifications will be sent out by November 20. The next proposal call will close February 26, 2020.
|
|
|
|
HFIR successfully passed a rigorous DOE Readiness Assessment. Activities remain on schedule to support startup on or before November 5, 2019.

DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program applications due November 14, 2019
|
|
|
The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding US graduate students to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory/facility in areas that address scientific challenges central to the DOE Office of Science mission. The research opportunity is expected to advance a graduate student’s overall doctoral thesis while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories/facilities. Applications for the 2019 Solicitation are due November 14, 2019. Detailed information about the program, including eligibility requirements and access to the online application system, can be found here.

An SMS message service is now in place to communicate beam status changes, including beam start, shutdown, outages, and schedule changes, at HFIR and SNS. To opt in to SNS operating status, text “SNSINFO” to 333-111 to begin receiving the SMS messages on your phone. To stop receiving SMS Messages, type “STOP SNSINFO” to 333-111. Status via email is still available by entering your email address on the SNS registration page. For HFIR status, text “HFIRINFO” to 333-111 (or “STOP HFIRINFO”).
