Women in HPC October 2019 Newsletter

It’s now November! SC19 is just around the corner and we’re so excited to present all of the activities we have lined up! We’re offering a very important panel with some incredible male allies, such as Ian Foster, Cory Snavely, and Brendan Bouffler, and fabulous short talks by Elizabeth Bautista, Hai Ah Nam, and Jo Adegbola on ‘Thriving at the Workplace.’

Hopefully you can join us in Denver this November, because it will surely be our best event yet. During SC19 you can meet our newest WHPC fellows (see below). These 2019 WHPC fellows were chosen from more than 100 applications! Congratulations to all these wonderful women.

Don’t forget that the WHPC Chapters Programme is still open for new applications! So, seize the opportunity and find out if your team is ready to become a WHPC Chapter.

The WHPC Summit is now open for submissions! Whether you’d like to present your work on HPC or equity diversity and inclusion, be a speaker, or submit a poster, we want to receive your submission. Check out the full details here.

We are counting down the days to SC19 and hoping to see many of you in Denver, but if you can’t make it, don’t hesitate to reach out to WHPC electronically with new ideas or questions. Together we can work on changing the face of HPC. We would love to hear from you — just reply to this email or submit a query here

Enjoy our October newsletter, and we hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!

Meet the 2019 WHPC Fellows!

The 2019 WHPC Fellows have been selected in collaboration with our Corporate Champions, Intel and Texas Advanced Computing Centre. Our inaugural fellowships were highly competitive, with over 100 applications for just three fellowships. Each Fellowship is funded by the generous donations of our Corporate Champions, and provides a woman with the opportunity to participate in the SC conference in Denver this November.

The Fellowship programme has been developed to improve the representation of women in the international HPC community by providing a platform for women to showcase their work and inspire other women. The primary focus is on enabling early and mid-career women to flourish in their careers, anywhere in the world.

The 2019 Fellows are:

  • Zhe Bai, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

  • Priyanka Ghosh, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

  • Raksha Roy, HPCNepal

The winners will receive travel support to attend SC19 in Denver, Colorado (USA), where they will be recognized during the WHPC workshop.

Applications Now Open for New WHPC Chapters

The WHPC Chapters Programme is awaiting your application! If you are passionate about providing local activities designed to help recruit and retain a diverse workforce, supporting women, and helping your organization better support women, now is the time to get organised!

Chapters can be composed of a group of HPC users within a company or research organisation or a group of people in a geographical region. We currently have regional chapters (Texas and UK), as well as individual organisations, as chapters. We encourage a variety of chapter sizes and each will develop activities that suit the needs of their communities. All chapters have the support of WHPC behind them all the way! Our Chapters Committee shares ideas, knowledge, and best practices.
