"I Changed my Mind"

This story from Dr Sureka Goringe , the National Director of UnitingWorld was originally published a couple of weeks ago. This story  highlights how education through the bible teachings can have a huge impact on the traditional beliefs of peoples in the Pacific region.
Women and girls in Vanuatu experience significant disadvantage. They are excluded from making decisions and leadership at all levels, they live with poor health, they reach lower education levels than men, and they face widespread violence. At least 60% of women in Vanuatu have experienced physical or sexual violence from their partners. Any positive change through education that has long lasting effects on the health and safety of women and girls in this region is extremely important. Thank you Dr Goringe and UnitingWorld for all that you are achieving for the future of everyone in this region.

"I changed my mind." They're four words you don't hear very often, especially when it comes to ideas and opinions that we hold close to our hearts. It's a rare soul indeed who is able to humbly admit they might've had things wrong and now see differently!
Pastor Nippy, from Vanuatu, is one such man. He grew up in Efate, Vanuatu, where people live traditionally – including holding the view that women are subordinate to men.
"Culturally, the man is the boss, there is nothing to do with women," Pastor Nippy says. "My people in Vanuatu do not know what gender balance (equality) is... Now that I realise, it has infected me! I like it!"
What changed Nippy's mind?
Nippy says it was the Bible.
"I never, never knew what gender balance was," he recalls. "But as we talked and studied the Bible, and as I made my own studies, I realised that yes! There is something there!"
In a region where upwards of 90% of people identify as Christian and the Church is an influential voice, our church partners have an incredible opportunity to create change. With funding that many of you have provided, they've produced Bible studies, run gender workshops and trained advocates for biblical gender equality.
The approach has been more effective than we could ever have dreamed.
"These studies have gone out to villages and local congregations, newspapers, local media, television - all talking about what the Bible says about gender balance," says Pastor Nippy. "People said, 'okay, we never thought man and woman could be on equal terms!' It has stirred up for me a passion to write more studies for the villages."
I rejoice when I hear stories like these, and I'm just as passionate about getting the word out to villages in Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Kiribati and Tonga as Nippy is. But we can't do it without your help.
I've heard the stories of men changing the way they relate to their families; women taking on leadership positions they never believed were possible; girls given the chance to attend school. This is the change we want to see, the change we know is possible for our sisters in the Pacific.
Please, if you're able, give a gift to help our partners continue this work. And please keep praying for Pastor Nippy and others like him who are changing hearts, minds and lives in the Pacific.
We are celebrating the start of three new Placements in our Presbytery, over the next three months.
