October Program Reminder

HELPING OUR SMALLEST FALCON

Tuesday, October 15 -  6:45 p.m.
THE KAUFFMAN FOUNDATION CONFERENCE CENTER
, 4801 Rockhill Rd. KCMO 64110, in the Brookside Room - Social time from 6:00-6:45 p.m. Business and announcements will precede the meeting. Come learn about our beloved sassy “mini dynamo”, the American Kestrel, from Lakeside Nature Center staff member and wildlife rehabilitation specialist, Ruth Stephens. This colorful, feisty little falcon helps humans in a big way, disposing of rodents and insects as it hovers over our fields. But kestrel populations have been mysteriously declining in recent years. Find out how YOU can help the American Kestrel Partnership gather data needed to solve the mystery and aid the recovery of this important bird of prey! You will also have a chance to win a FREE Kestrel nest box of your own!

Wednesday, October 23 -  5:30 - 8:00 p.m.
AUDUBON CONSERVATION RANCHING KC ROUNDUP -
The Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center, 4750 Troost Ave, Kansas City, MO 64110. Please join Burroughs Audubon Society and partners for the Kansas City kick off of Audubon Conservation Ranching and Audubon Certified Beef. The evening program will include a reception with Audubon Certified Beef appetizers by local chefs and a presentation on this innovative approach to protect our grassland birds.

A recent study concluded we have lost more than 1 out of every 4 birds since 1970 with the largest decline being among grassland birds. A program sourcing local beef from ranching partners in Missouri and Kansas can help change this for birds such as Upland Sandpipers, Scissor-tailed Flycatchers and Henslow's Sparrows.

Partners include National Audubon Society, Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri River Bird Observatory, and Prairiebird Pastures. Please RSVP for a reception featuring beef from Audubon Certified ranches at 5:30 p.m. Program beginning at 6:30 p.m.

THE GREAT SANDHILL CRANE MIGRATION -
In The Troost Room of The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation Conference Center, 4801 Rockuill Rd, Kansas City, MO 64110. Celebrate fall migration season with a wonderful presentation about one of our favorite birds—the Sandhill Crane! Burroughs Audubon Society is proud to host Chuck Cooper, CEO of the Crane Trust in Wood River, Nebraska. Mr. Cooper’s presentation will feature a special showing of The Nature Makers, a new documentary from Los Angeles filmmaker Scott Saunders, that highlights the work of the Trust.

For 41 years, the Crane Trust’s mission has been to protect and manage land in the Big Bend region of the Platte River, so that it continues to function as a life support system for whooping cranes, sandhill cranes, and other migratory bird species.

A FIELD GUIDE TO THE FUTURE OF NORTH AMERICANS BIRDS

Wood Thrush. Photo: Megumi Aita/Audubon Photography Awards.
On October 10, Audubon released its latest report on birds and climate - Survival by Degrees: 389 Bird Species on the Brink. Using advanced climate models, the report gives an unparalleled view into which birds, and which places (state briefs for KS and MO), are at greatest risk, providing our best field guide to the future of North American birds. Of the 604 species modeled, 389 are vulnerable to extinction, meaning that as soon as 2080 more than half of their current range would become inhospitable and they wouldn’t gain new ground. If that comes to pass, that future guide would be half the thickness of the one now on your shelf. Read more...

KANSAS CITY CHAPTER EVENTS

Hey bird photographers! Hope Is The Thing With Feathers, Missouri River Bird Observatory's 4th annual bird photo contest, is now open. This year they have four submission categories (wetland birds, forest birds, prairie birds and backyard birds) with YOUTH and adult prizes in each, plus a Grand Prize! See: mrbo.org/photocontest2019 for all details and to enter.

The Kansas City chapter is one of several Missouri Young Birders Clubs (MYBC) around the state, an effort spearheaded and directed by the Missouri River Bird Observatory, with the purpose of bringing young people together to learn about birds and conservation in an atmosphere of fun and friendship. The club meets monthly for birding field trips and other bird-related activities. In addition to birding, youth members will be given valuable opportunities to take on leadership roles within the club. Contact Sara Scheil at 816-830-1628.

October and November Field Trips

TO VARIOUS KANSAS AND MISSOURI LOCATIONS

Burroughs field trips are free to Audubon members and the public, and people of any age or level of experience are welcome to participate! Any trip may involve walking on a variety of terrain and surfaces, but some trips will be more strenuous than others. Trip leaders can advise you of the physical activity involved. Since we visit a number of wild areas and habitats, we respectfully ask that your pets not accompany us on the trail. If they're not given to vocal excitement, crated pets in vehicles are fine.
