Did you miss Senior Book Break?

October’s meeting was small but very animated, leading to several lively discussions on a variety of subjects, much like the books chosen for this month’s topic. Here are the titles and authors that were discussed under the topic of history, hauntings or harvest:

1. The Least One by Borden Deal

Written in 1967, the book takes a close look at growing up in a poor white, share-cropping family, during the Great Depression. Told through the eyes of a 12-year-old boy, it evokes memories of cotton fields, home gardens and harvesting when that same garden meant life or death to many families.

2. 13 Days by Robert F. Kennedy

First-hand reports of a dangerous time in America, written by a man who was there, in the Situation Room, during the thirteen days of a Cold War standoff, one that could have led to war between Russia and the United States. The diplomacy involved in settling the matter is intense and the book well written.

3. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doeer

The Pulitzer Prize winning account of two people, a young, blind French girl and a German boy, who is the product of Hitler’s Youth program. A life lesson in the ways people from opposite sides attempt to help others, even in the worst of times.

4. My Autobiography by Benito Mussolini

A self-serving book that reveals a lot about Mussolini, the man, through the eyes of Mussolini, the man. History students will find the origins of fascism among the pages of this frank, and arrogant, book by the man himself.

5. Coming of Age by Studs Terkel

Pulitzer Prize winning author Terkel interviews people, 70 to  99, in all walks of life, from the famous to the obscure, delivering a panorama of life in America and how it has changed over the years. Another highly recommended selection.

6. The Front Porch Prophet by Raymond L. Atkins

What do a trigger-happy bootlegger with pancreatic cancer, an alcoholic helicopter pilot who is afraid to fly, and a dead guy with his feet in a camp stove have in common? The answer to all three is found in Sequoyah, Georgia, in this award-winning tale of a small town, its history and its people. Where else can you find a war hero named Termite, a cook named Hoghead and a supervisor named Pillsbury, who nearly gets hung by his employees?

Our next Senior Book Break topic is Seniors. See you at the library at 10:30 a.m. on November 12.
