Moments of Kona 2019

SCOTT Triathletes Alistair Brownlee and Sebastian Kienle are aiming for the win at Ironman Hawaii 2019. In our series, “Moments of Kona” we provide an insight into their daily training life on-site in Hawaii and the rising tension in the ramp up to the race.
Hawaii, United States - October 2019. Sebastian Kienle knows the island like no other competitor. The 2014 winner will line up for an impressive 8th time and will try to add a second Kona title to his stellar palmares. In contrast to Alistair Brownlee, the double Olympic champion just recently switched to the long distance and will debut on Saturday, but if someone can win the biggest and toughest Ironman on his first attempt than it is most probably the Yorkshire native.

"Moments of Kona" features episodes about SCOTT athletes competing at the Ironman World championships in Kona, Hawaii. That the paradise island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is the venue of one of toughest sporting events in the world makes for impressive images and dramatic stories. Nowhere else do pain and glory seem to be closer and further away. Look behind the scenes of our athletes and get inspired for the sport of triathlon.

Episode 1 - Sebastian Kienle
2014 champion Sebastian Kienle changed his final preparation for Ironman Kona as he opted to train on the island of Maui for his strive for a second title. In previous years Sebastian Kienle came to Hawaii 5 weeks prior to the race. This year it is the same. But with one big difference. He decided to train in Maui instead of the Big Island to have a difference approach to the most prestigious triathlon in the world.

Syncros Belcarra V TRI Saddle
At Ironman World Championships Sebastian Kienle and Alistair Brownlee will race on a new Syncros Triathlon saddle. Together with our biomechanics partner Gebeomized we have developed a solution focused on a marriage of biomechanical efficiency, comfort and stability all in an aerodynamic package – the Belcarra V TRI.
Learn more about the developement process of the Belcarra V TRI in the video. This video gives some insight into how and why we developed the saddle with the help of Sebastian Kienle and Alister Brownlee in particular who were part of the prototype testing.

Product testing - Syncros athletes display an essential part of the development process

Helping riders to find the sweet spot of a sustainable riding position that is also aerodynamic is at the core of what world leaders in bike fit Gebiomized focus on. Their roster includes many from the top tier of Olympic, 70.3 and full Ironman distance athletes. Together with the Gebiomized team we analyzed their database of rider saddle pressure fit to look for commonalities and traits that we could easily identify.  We then took this data and applied it to the saddle shape optimizing for fit and performance in the extreme Triathlon position and utilizing our manufacturing expertise to create a shape for the rider that is aerodynamic but that they can actually ride for a sustained period of time – such as an Ironman.
