Primary News 19/20

Issue 8

Dear Parents,

The year is in full swing and the daily learning that is occurring is inspiring. Thank you for your contributions to your child’s success and in particular your recent commitment to your child’s portfolio via Seesaw. We enjoy seeing many of you posting thoughtful comments and know that this engagement acts to motivate your child but also provides them with an authentic audience that appreciates their efforts.

Grade 3 had just finished their unit, How we organize ourselves, and their central idea is: People can collaborate to organize society. Throughout this unit, students inquired into how groups/communities function and important decision making skills. As part of their final project, each class paired up with a PK2 class. The Grade 3s surveyed the PK2s and took their ideas to design play equipment for them. Each design team had to show their understanding of Approaches to Learning, or ATLs (social, self-management, thinking, and communication skills). It was such a fun collaboration and through this unit, students showed that they were communicatorsrisk-takers, and reflective.

Grade 2 launched their How We Organize Ourselves unit with a visit to Pizza Hut in Sea World. The focus of their unit is to learn about the scientific process, and why scientists follow the same format whenever they write a report about an experiment. Students learned how pizza dough is made from the head chef at the restaurant, were able to create (and eat  🙂 ) their own pizzas, and then wrote out the procedure that they followed in order to create their pizzas.

Assembly
This week’s assembly was led by 5A. The students demonstrated a variety of typical engagements throughout their week which included Visual Arts, Maths, Literacy and Unit of Inquiry. It was evident that the students are developing a wide range of understandings as well as ATL skills and Learner Profile dispositions. Additionally, we felt very reassured that the students are being well prepared to embark on their Secondary schooling next year!

This week’s Golden Sneaker was awarded to 2C for showing responsibility.  The next Golden Sneaker will be awarded to the class that shows RESPECT!

On Thursday, the students in 2B and 5C took advantage of a beautiful afternoon to go swimming together as part of their buddies program. This helps SIS further strengthen its community and creates wonderful memories. Good times were had by all!
