Mason Professor Creates Biomaterials to Help Repair Knees and Reduce Pain

Mason bioengineering professor Caroline Hoemann is making significant strides in developing treatments for chronic knee pain. “My long-term goal is to restore pain-free knees to patients and reduce their need for knee replacement. It would give them back their lives,” she says.

She is creating new biomaterials that might one day be used to treat damaged cartilage, a tissue that acts as a shock absorber for the bones. “Some biomaterials have a unique potential to stimulate the patients’ own cells to preserve and regenerate cartilage," Hoemann says.

Hoemann has worked on this problem for more than two decades as a professor at the École Polytechnique in Montreal, and as a research director at a Montreal-based biomedical device company.

The EDGE Celebrates 10 Years

The EDGE, Mason Recreation’s Team Development and Experiential Learning program, celebrated its 10th anniversary on October 4 and 5.

The celebration kicked off October 4 with cake, tours, an overview of The EDGE professional development programs, and a chance to participate in the Total Team Challenge aerial activity. On October 5, Mason students, faculty, staff, as well as members of the community were invited to an open climb at the Alpine Tower, along with games, activities, and light snacks.

The EDGE serves groups of all kinds with leadership, team building, and corporate development programs that:

  • Energize teams with active and engaging programs,
  • Develop skills for effective communication, collaboration and problem solving,
  • Grow individual and group leadership functions, and
  • Excel at identifying and capitalizing on strengths for profound transformation.

Monet Pharmaceuticals Licenses Mason Technology

Mason researchers have discovered the exact location where two proteins responsible for hiding cancer cells from the immune system bind. This discovery provides a novel approach to developing new cancer immunotherapy medicines that people can take as a pill instead of through an IV. The findings were published in July 2019 in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

In the article, the team reported the development and optimization of a novel protein dye that has been successfully tested on clinically relevant protein complexes, PD-1 and PD-L1. The team also unveils new findings that chemically decipher the way that dyes interact with proteins, which has been a mystery to scientist for decades.

Monet Pharmaceuticals, a newly formed pharmaceutical company based in Prince William County, has partnered with Mason researchers to exclusively license patents owned by the university broadly covering the protein-painting technology.
