Regional Australia Institute: Regional Futures eNews October 2019

From the co-CEOs

New figures just released show that one in three regional jobs vacancies are in Queensland. More than 13,000 jobs were advertised in August - and a large number of those are professional roles.

These roles include doctors, nurses, finance workers, human resource managers, engineers, educational professionals, sales and marketing managers, and even media representatives.

We were pleased to unveil these new figures at our Regions Rising QLD event last week in Brisbane, and thank those who attended.  This new data has sparked a conversation across the Sunshine State about how our regional towns and cities will fill these roles.

Internet vacancies are growing fastest in the regions outside the state’s southeast, but population growth is not keeping pace.  In short, regional Queensland needs more workers than current mobility patterns are providing.  At the RAI, we look forward to working with regional leaders to address this important challenge.

The next stop on our national roadshow is Hobart on 7 November. Please see below for details, as well as more information about the August job vacancy figures for your state.

Other figures of interest this month were the Federal Government's regional visa holder numbers. Figures released yesterday revealed 6350 regional visas have been granted between July and September, up from 2836 in the same period the previous year.

We know regional migration is one of the solutions to help fill jobs and alleviate population decline in regional areas. Our Migration Director Shyla Vohra is certainly meeting with many regional leaders across the country, and will be heading to WA next week.

If your community is interested in finding out how you can get involved, please find Shyla’s contact details below. Also, you may like to read our submission to the Federal Government’s Joint Standing Committee on Migration, who is undertaking an inquiry into migration in regional Australia.

And finally, an update on our Regional Australia Hub here in Canberra. This week, we look forward to hosting the Leadership Ballarat and Western Region team from Victoria, and Agribusiness Australia in our fantastic, newly renovated space. To make an enquiry or to book, please call our office on (02) 6260 3733.
