Chair message

Hello all,

I’ve just had one of the most memorable experiences of my life. And it had nothing to do with IABC which may surprise those of you who know me! I was lucky enough to be at the MCG with more than 100,000 fans watching my team, Richmond FC, win the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final. It was incredible in so many ways and as a fan I loved it.  From a communication perspective they excel. In four short years they transformed from a club that aspired but struggled to succeed to the best performing club in the league. From the board, to the executive through to the players, they’ve aligned to their purpose, vision, values and strategy. They’ve executed perfectly with a clear narrative and messaging, engaged beautifully with stakeholders at all levels, and their people, particularly the players and coaching team living their values. It’s the most admired AFL team on the field, in the community and in business. I have no doubt it will be a case study in best practice.

Aside from the very happy fan, I’m also excited to share our news on the forthcoming #FUSION20 conference. Some of you would be aware that due to the current unrest in Hong Kong, the IABC APAC Board made the difficult decision to move the #FUSION20 conference to another city in our region. We’re very grateful to Virginia Chi and her team from IABC Hong Kong for their support and time they invested in planning for Hong Kong and we hope to revisit there at some stage in the near future.

We’re thrilled to announce that #FUSION20 will be held in Wellington, New Zealand 25-27 March 2020 with the strong support of IABC Wellington. More details follow in this newsletter.

My thanks to Kristy Christie and Rauf Hameed who’ve developed our new IABC APAC website that is live this week. Please take a look and let us know your thoughts. We’ll be progressing the next phase over the coming months and be sharing more fresh content relevant to you in the region.

There’s much happening in IABC with the October membership month so do take the opportunity to renew, join or recommend IABC to a colleague or friend in the industry as it offers great value. We know there have been a few issues mid-year with the changeover of the IT systems and database, so if you’re still having any issues then please reach out to me directly.

Don’t forget the IABC Gold Quill Awards are now open for submissions and we’ll be running a free webinar on 24 October with tips on how to enter the awards to maximise your chance of success. I can tell you that the APAC continent was very loud and proud at this year’s Gold Quill Awards in Vancouver, and we’d love to replicate that effort in Chicago next year. So please take a look at the Gold Quill website, register for the webinar, and enter the awards.

That’s probably enough from me for now, but please feel free to reach out to me if you have questions or suggestions regarding IABC in the APAC region. My email is zoraartis@yahoo.com.au or you can find me on LinkedIn or Twitter.

Cheers,
Z

Save the Date
25 - 27 March 2020 in Wellington, New Zealand

As communicated earlier, FUSION 2020 had been moved from 2019 but we are delighted to announce that we have the final date now.

FUSION20: The Future is Now – Communicating in the dynamic Asia Pacific, will be held from 25th to 27th March 2020 in Wellington, New Zealand at Te Papa, National Museum of New Zealand. Early bird tickets will be available soon.

Call for Speakers

We are also looking for outstanding presenters to join ranks of the stellar speakers like Gabrielle Dolan (business storytelling and thought leadership trainer and author), Kristin Flor Perret (marketer), and Tracey Spicer (journalist, author and social justice leader) who presented their thoughts in the past FUSION conferences. With a variety of interactive formats, #FUSION20 will take a thematic approach to exploring opportunities - all of which are listed in our prospectus.

This is what IABC APAC looks for in a keynote, session or masterclass presenter:

  • An authentic, dynamic speaker with a compelling presence who is able to connect with this audience in a meaningful way
  • Knowledgeable about international business communication and able to articulate the tangible importance and critical value of communication to an organisation
  • Prepared to offer innovative content that will resonate with an audience of international business communicators, with a focus on Asia Pacific
  • Proven ability in terms of presentations to international audiences at commercial business conferences

If you’re an expert on a topic that can help communicators gain the knowledge, tools and ideas they need to be prepared for what’s ahead, we want to hear from you! Please submit your speaker proposal by 11:59 P.M. AEDT, 8th November 2019.

Our new IABC APAC website is up at www.IABCapac.com. This is the first phase and we'll be updating it over the next couple of months. You’ll find it provides everything you need to remind yourself and to help others learn about current initiatives, upcoming events, and new items relevant for today’s communication professionals, including links to:
  • Recordings of all APAC webinars
  • All you need to know about how to get GCCC certified
  • A recap video of the 2019 IABC World Conference in Vancouver
  • IABC's private online community for members, The Hub, which connects you with your peers worldwide. Get advice, start a discussion, or access resources

The website offers this, and much more, “About IABC” and IABC membership, so that you can refer your peers to it when people ask, “Why join IABC?”.

Visit the IABC APAC website
From 1st October to 11:59 p.m. PDT 31st October, the coupon code OCTOBER10 provides a 10% discount on international dues to anyone who joins IABC or renews their (active or lapsed) membership. The discount is automatically applied to group & corporate memberships during October.

Group membership (vs corporate packages)

IABC International Executive Board (IEB) has approved that there is no cap on the number that can make up a group membership as long as there are more than 5 members joining at the same time (one invoice) from one organisation. This will give you and a small group a straight 15% discount on the international dues. It is important to note that this is not what IABC calls a corporate package as it does not include all the additional elements that the three tiers of corporate packages offer.

Submissions are now open! Remember to submit your work for recognition in the IABC Gold Quill Awards. Submitting by the early-bird deadline of 15 October 2019 helps members save up to US $200. IABC members also enjoy discounted submission fees compared to non-members. Check out the GQ Awards resources link to learn more and get started on your entry (or more than one entry).

Looking for a mentor? Felicia Shiu can coordinate volunteer mentors for entrants to help them improve their entries.

Upcoming APAC Webinar: Gold Quill Award Tips

In 2019 we had 35 Gold Quill awards in APAC, which was a very good result. Thanks to the region having some of the best communication professionals, we look forward to celebrating even more winners.

In support of this, we're organising a free webinar with Gold Quill winners Monika Lancucki ABC  and Ayllie White on Thursday 24 October at 4pm AEDT -- to share their experience, and tips for success, in the hopes of supporting an increasing number of submissions (and hopefully wins) within the region.
