Towards the Finals

NSWBA is going to send 22 teams to represent New South Wales in the Grand National Open Teams (GNOT) National Final in Tweed Heads from 29 November to 2 December 2019. Seven of these teams have been selected from the Sydney Metropolitan region (two qualified via the NSWBA Direct Qualifying Monday Night event, one via the North Shore Bridge Club Direct Qualifying event and four from the NSWBA GNOT Metro Final) and 15 of them come from ten GNOT Country regions. The GNOT Metro Final was held on 21-22 September. Thirty-three teams (30 club representatives and 3 direct entries) played in the knock-out competition. The four qualifiers to the National Final (two from the knock-out section and two from the Swiss repechage) were:

Team Dalley - Paul Dalley, Julian Foster, David Weston and Fraser Rew (undefeated KO winner)

Team King - Linda King, Kim Neale, Ruth Tobin, Tony Ong, Nick Fahrer and David Wurth (undefeated KO winner)

Team Adams - Liz Adams, Andrew Peake, Murray Green and Ron Speiser (first in the Swiss repechage)

Team Grewcock - Les Grewcock, Mark Kolodziejczyk, Ranjit Limaye and Witold Chylewski (second in the Swiss repechage)

Please view the full results of the GNOT Metro Final HERE. These four teams will join the other three teams who qualified via direct qualifying events earlier this year to complete the list of representative teams from the Sydney Metro region:

Team Ashton - Sophie Ashton, David Wiltshire, Sartaj Hans, David Beauchamp (qualified via the NSWBA Direct Qualifying Monday night event)

Team Kanetkar - Avi Kanetkar, Bruce Neill, Nye Griffths, Johnno Newman, Peter Buchen, Terry Brown (qualified via the NSWBA Direct Qualifying Monday night event)

Team Jeffery - Peter Jeffery, Yumin Li, Wayne Zhu and Yixiang Zhang (qualified via the North Shore Bridge Club Direct Qualifying event)

Results from the 10 Country GNOT regions can be found here. The qualified teams from 6 of the regions are known and the rest will be published in the next eCongress News.
The State Open Teams (officially named John Arkinstall State Teams) consists of club qualifying events, regional and zonal finals, and culminates in a State Final which will be held at the NSWBA in mid-November. Ten teams (6 from the country regions, 2 from the Metropolitan Zone and 2 from the NSWBA) contest the State Final.

A one-day congress Jacaranda Teams will be held on Sunday 27 October at the NSWBA. A light lunch is included. Entry is open to all palyers. The Jacaranda Teams Congress also doubles as the Metropolitan Final of the State Teams, so as well as the normal cash prizes, the top eligible team will be offered a place in the State Open Teams Finals on 15-17 November.

Two New Booklets by
Rakesh Kumar

Do you like reading Rakesh Kumar's columns? Would you like to support a good cause?

Rakesh Kumar has been busy writing two booklets about Better Partnership Bridge, for improving and intermediate club players. If you would like to support a good cause, you can acquire these booklets in return for a donation to the Southern Highlands Bridge Club, which is in the process of building its own clubhouse. For more information, click here.

To obtain copies, please email the Treasurer of Southern Highlands Bridge Club at:
shbc.treasurer1@gmail.com
and provide your name and address. You will be sent confirmation and SHBC account details, so that you can deposit the appropriate amount (including postage) with your name as a reference. The booklet(s) will then be posted to you.
Ask a Director
This Q&A column is designed for you to ask questions. No question is too silly, please feel free to write to us about your uncertainty about a situation at the table, and we will help you to find the answer.

To understand situations better where a director is called, Matthew McManus has explained them in detail and the reasons behind the rulings in his articles. They are written from the angle of players. Review his columns to be a better congress player. Review his columns here >

CONGRESS PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Your Association is pleased to acknowledge this 2019 Award. There will be four categories:
  • Open
  • Intermediate <750 MPs
  • Restricted <300 MPs
  • Novice <100 MPs
Click HERE for our current "interim" list, as at 31 July 2019. This award is based on masterpoints earned at NSW Congresses held under the auspices of NSWBA during the year.
CONGRESS PSYCHE REGISTER
The NSWBA has decided to establish a central psyche register for all congresses held in NSW.

The laws permit players to deviate from their systemic agreements so long as the partner of the player who does so has no greater reason to be aware of this deviation than the opponents. Once your partnership has a history of deviating from its agreements in a certain situation you are required to inform your opponents of this tendency.

If you feel that your opponents have psyched against you, please email details of the hand to the psyche register – no action will be taken against players who are reported to the psyche register but once a pair has multiple entries in the psyche register, congress directors will be informed so that they are aware of this history when making their rulings.

A form which can be used for submissions is available HERE.
