Highlight of the Summer: Begg Rock & San Nicolas
This was the highlight of the summer, or perhaps the year! We made it to Begg Rock and San Nicolas Island! It has been two years since the last time we made it there.
When we boarded the Peace Dive Boat in the evening of August 23rd, the planned departure time told us we had a good chance of making it to Begg Rock and San Nicolas Island. We woke up early on September 24th to find the elusive rock in our sight.
As we descended down along the bow anchor, we saw a field of white metridium sea anemone below us. The surface of the rock was completely covered with colorful invertebrates: sea anemones, sea cucumbers, feather duster worms, barnacles, nudibranchs, etc. The fish in the area are huge. It was a treat to see many large male sheepheads confidently swimming around. We enjoyed two dives at Begg Rock, and then moved to dive sites around San Nicolas Island. Needless to say, there were a boat full of happy divers.
September Local Dive Trip Highlight - Santa Barbara Island

Standing roughly 33 nautical miles away from the mainland as one of the smallest Channel Islands, Santa Barbara Island is a tiny, isolated piece of land poking out from the wraparound blue. Often a target for unforgiving currents and swell, it’s not every day when you’re greeted with near-perfect conditions at her frequently sought-after reefs. Mother ocean was probably feeling a bit generous this day, as we were fortunate enough to be one of the few lucky divers.

New Overseas Trip: Anilao, Philippines & Okinawa/Yonaguni
Anilao: March 23 - 30, 2020
Okinawa: March 30 - April 5, 2020
We have the details on our 2020 trip to Philippines with optional Okinawa extension posted to our website. Both parts of this expedition will be co-hosted by Ocean Safari’s resident macro photography enthusiast and nudibranch geek, Megumi Itoh.
This is one of the few resort-based dive trips for Ocean Safari, which means this would be a good trip to bring your non-diver friends and family member.
