Welcome to Gallery Q News!
Our community of local artists is committed to creating Fresh Local Art. As artists, we have stories to tell, knowledge to share, inspiration to tap into and new artistic horizons to discover. We look forward to sharing our art and ourselves with you in this format, and we hope that you will find something within to spark curiosity and delight.
Let this be your invitation into the world of Q. Come on in!

:: SPOTLIGHT ON ::
Robert Rosen

Today we meet Robert Rosen, photographer.
Q :: Describe the art you create.
RR :: Shapes/Lines/Values/Color/Texture/Contrast
Q :: What is your background/how did you get into making art?
RR :: Music was my first love.  I began as a musician spending most of my adult life making and teaching music.  I am a percussionist.  I taught instrumental and choral music in a rural North Carolina public school system after graduating from the University of Illinois.  My wife and I performed for many years as the Uwharrie Clarinet-Percussion Duo performing in Carnegie Hall and all over the United States.  I have performed in many orchestras including the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, Greensboro North Carolina Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony, and many others.  I was tympanist with the Central Wisconsin Symphony for many years until a hand injury curtailed my performances.  I retired in 2011 from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point music faculty after 27 years.  In 2003, while I was still on the music faculty, the Fine Arts Center went through a significant building remodel/addition.  I came with my camera to photograph the first day of demolition and returned frequently to photograph the demolition and building process.  I began to see narrative relationships and accidental design in the twisted rubble of the demolition and the machinery, especially the cranes.
Q :: Who or what are your biggest influences?
RR :: Chance and the natural world.
Q :: What do you like best about being an artist?
RR :: The experience of discovery.
Q :: Do you make art full-time or do you have other pursuits?

RR :: I am the director of the Very Young Composers of Central Wisconsin.
The program provides opportunities for 4th and 5th grade students to compose original music, no experience required.  The Young Composers are mentored by undergraduate music majors at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point serving as Teaching Artists.  The Teaching Artists do not teach the Young Composers how to compose music.  Rather their role is that of a scribe.  Faithfully transferring the musical ideas of the Young Composers into standard music notation for later performance.  This year will be the 10th anniversary of the program.
Q :: What themes/motifs recur in your artwork?
RR :: Water, roads, fence and power lines, mountains, industry.
Q :: Where do you make your art?
RR :: Image capture happens outdoors mostly in the Midwest, Northern Plains States, and the Rocky Mountains. Digital development, printing, and preparation for presentation are done in my studio.  The entire lower level of my house, which has no interior walls, was originally my percussion studio.  It now functions as my photography studio.  It houses my very large printer, converted ping-pong table for mounting preparation, and a very large table for framing.  My prints are stored in two large flat file cabinets.

Q :: What is the best piece of advice that you have received that influenced your life in art?
Trust your instincts.
Q :: How has being a part of the Gallery Q Artists Cooperative benefited you as an artist?
Being a member of Gallery Q provides an opportunity to present my work throughout the year without needing to be present at all times.
Q :: Is there something you are currently working on or are excited about starting that you can tell us about?
RR :: I am traveling to Colorado in October to connect with a long-time friend who is a music composer.  He is in the early stages of a composition that will combine his music with a projected video.  We will travel to the Mesa Verde National Park where I will be doing the photography for the video.
Q :: Anything else you would care to share?
RR :: Onward and upward.
"Taking pictures is savoring life intensely,
every hundredth of a second."

Chico Art Center, Chico, California has chosen Silversmith Joan North
to be one of two Featured Artists for the months of
October, November, and December 2019.

North responded, “I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing my relationship with Chico that started years ago. I always liked doing things a special way, sometimes surprising others. Now, as a silversmith, I found my happy place, where I live in creativity. I like lines over circles. I like floating over layers. I like subtle over complex. I like making one new piece over duplicating the design. I feel blessed to have found this passion and grateful that some folks like what I do.”

Congratulations, Joan!
Mixed media and jewelry artist Erin Prais-Hintz is hard at work on a small collection of pieces for a brand new exhibit coming to the Center for Visual Arts in Wausau called In Full Bloom. This exhibit will put Erin's sculptural statement necklaces inspired by the shapes and forms of flowers next to watercolor floral paintings from a Cedarburg artist. Erin described her inspiration by saying this, "Since the watercolorist uses so many bright colors to focus on each individual flower, I wanted my necklaces to be a more sculptural counterpoint to the explosion of color. Each piece I make will focus on one particular bloom, on the shapes of the petals and leaves, rendered in wire and hand-formed clay to appear as if my sketchbook has come to life."
(Above you can see parts of the dahlia, anemone and lily-of-the-valley necklaces, in progress.)
The In Full Bloom exhibit will take place in The Vault of the CVA October 18 through December 28, 2019 with the opening reception on Friday, October 25th at the CVA in Wausau.
Gallery Q was honored to be selected as the location for the 2019 AIG celebration of diversity in Central Wisconsin event this past Thursday, September 26th. Included were speakers Senator Patrick Testin, Sara Brish sharing the plans underway for the Rotary Club's new sculpture gardens on the riverfront near the bandshell celebrating our sister cities in Poland, Russia and Nicauragua, UWSP Professor Kelly Wilz and Chia Moua of Freedom Inc leading us all in a dynamic privilege walk experience that generated a lot of discussion, and capped by an engaging keynote talk by Lisa Cruz the CEO of Red Shoes Inc. There was yummy food provided by some downtown businesses and an outstanding musical trio with a Latin flair called the Silva Band. Thank you to AIG  for this wonderful event for our community!
