Hundreds of Oakland City Workers Take to the Streets to Expose Severe Understaffing 

On Wednesday, Sept. 25, nearly 500 Local 21 and SEIU 1021 members took to the streets in Downtown Oakland to protest the understaffing crisis. We took over the sidewalk on 14th and Broadway as city workers in trucks loudly honked in solidarity.  At one point, our picket line grew so large that it spilled over into the city intersection and we blocked traffic. 
 
State Assemblymember Rob Bonta spoke at action, telling city workers, “I stand with you. I support you. I have your back!” Oakland City Councilmember Nikki Bas joined the picket, as well as staff from many City Council offices, and dozens of labor and community allies.

“We’re out here because we want the residents of Oakland to get the services that they’ve paid for with their tax money. They’re not getting all the services they paid for, because we have an understaffing
crisis here in Oakland,” said Tony Daquipa on KTVU Channel 2. The informational picket was covered by multiple media outlets. Click on the images tor read the coverage.
They highlighted our understaffing crisis, citing the 600 vacancies, noted that we have been working without a contract since June, and that presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ support for our fight. 
 
Let it be known to the Oakland City Administration that Oakland City workers love Oakland, and we’re not backing down without a fight!

Factfinding Update
On Friday, September 27 and Monday, October 1, our Bargaining Team met with the City Administration and the neutral factfinder, Arbitrator Norman Brand. At the hearings, our Bargaining Team made a detailed case to the arbitrator about what the City needs to do to become a competitive employer. We also provided substantial evidence that the City has the resources and ability to invest in its workforce. 
 
The final hearing will be held on Monday, October 7.  After the arbitrator reviews the presented information, he can issue a public report with recommendations for reaching a settlement.
