Robert Mangan,  Principal

Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College

I remind our Year 12 boys of the requirements necessary in order to wear Senior Uniform (the white polo shirt) in Year 13, and enjoy the related privileges of permission to leave the school grounds at interval and lunchtime, and use of a motor-vehicle to and from school.  This is a privilege gained through either achieving NCEA Level 2 or by application.  This means a minimum of 60 Credits at Level 2 or above and 20 Credits at any other level.  The 20 Credits can be carried through from Level 1.  Those students who do not achieve NCEA Level 2 will need to apply for permission to wear the Senior Uniform.  The criteria for permission to be granted will be based on effort, attendance and behaviour.  Not achieving NCEA Level will not prevent a student from being granted permission to wear the Senior Uniform, provided the other three criteria have been met.

Where boys have worked at a satisfactory level to achieve their academic potential, attended school regularly and met expectations of behaviour, they will be given permission to wear the Senior Uniform.  Those who have made minimum effort, have irregular attendance and / or have not met expectations of behaviour, will not be given this privilege.  This policy has been introduced to further motivate our senior boys to achieve their academic potential and not to penalise those who struggle to reach this level of achievement.  A large number of boys are not motivated sufficiently by academic achievement alone and hence fail to make the necessary effort to achieve their academic potential while at secondary school.  A number of our Year 13 boys this year say this requirement was a motivating factor to work harder to achieve Level 2 NCEA.  Those who find achievement at this level more difficult will not be disadvantaged provided they are making the required effort to achieve.  Year 13 students who have not gained permission to wear Senior Uniform will have the opportunity to apply for permission at set intervals throughout the year.  The first opportunity to do this will be after the first set of senior reports are issued.  Those who meet the criteria will then be entitled to wear the uniform and receive the related privileges.  This policy is also in recognition of NCEA Level 2 as a minimum educational requirement for entry into tertiary institutions.

With NCEA external exams approaching quickly, and only 6 days left before Seniors are released on Study Leave, the College is a busy place.  We are working to maximise the last remaining school days to ensure our boys are well prepared for the upcoming external exams.  I would encourage parents to ensure their sons are focused on revision and preparation for the culmination of the academic year.

Reports for senior students will be posted online on Friday 1 November.  These are accessed through the parent portal on our website (https://www.tbc.school.nz/kb).  Log in using your user name and password, then select "reports" from the menu on the right-hand side.  If you have any problems accessing the report please contact the college or email w.taylor@tbc.school.nz  For those who do not have email addresses, reports will be posted out to you next week.  Should you require a hard copy of the report please contact the College Office.

The boys also have a number of commitments to meet with their year at the College ending, and I would ask you to ensure they attend to these.  A number have outstanding Subject Fees or Sports / Cultural fees that need to be paid prior to the end of the year.  These outstanding fees will be brought to their attention by Class and Form Teachers.  As well as fees they will need to ensure textbooks, sports uniforms and other resources are returned to the College.

I look forward to acknowledging and sharing in the achievement of our boys in Academic, Cultural and Sporting endeavours over the next few weeks.

Year 13 - Andre Moffat

Andre is described by his teachers as an all round good lad, who has made it his mission to push himself outside of his comfort zone and make the most of his last year at school.  Andre recently assisted another Year 13 student that he didn't know, helping him with a project outside of school time.  Paying it forward Andre; well done.
Year 12 - Sam Niles

Sam Niles has been outstanding with all tasks set in the Secondary Tertiary Partnership programme.  Sam has been a leader in the rat trap programme, Barista Port Express furniture building, and the set building for the school production of Oliver.  Sam is described by his teachers as reliable, he finds time to give to others and has had a great term at the College.

Year 11 - Lucas Cowley

Enthusiasm, diligence and positivity are common occurring adjectives used to describe Lucas' approach to schoolwork. Teachers admire his constant desire to challenge himself and his willingness to go above and beyond to do so. He has a dogged approach to excellence, and his grades are a testament to his determination. More importantly, he does all of this with a smile on his face. Lucas is a genuine young man who is clearly making the most of his opportunities at Tauranga Boys' College.

Year 10 - Te Ua Hoskin

Te Ua's teachers and tutor say that he has worked amazingly in all his core subjects and has been a stand out with his schoolwork, his work ethic and his attitude.  He has also been a part of the kapa haka group who have had a busy season with qualifying for nationals this year.  Te Ua is new to the school this year and has really made the most of his opportunities here at Tauranga Boys' College.

Year 9 - Byron Bunning

Byron is described by his tutor as a class leader and can always be relied upon to be a good role model to others in the class.  He has taken advantage of the many opportunities here at the College including playing sport, learning an instrument, entering the Young Innovators Award and winning a local film making competition.  Byron is diligent, hard working and an all round good man.

SECONDARY SCHOOL BOYS TEAM OF THE YEAR:
Tauranga Boys' College Underwater Hockey, Tauranga Boys' College Volleyball, Tauranga Boys' College Kayaking.

After placing 15th in 2018, the team set a goal of making the top ten in 2019, which given their lead up was realistic if they played to their potential.  Captained by Jack McManaway, this year’s team consisted of five Year 13’s and a large contingent of younger developing players.

Our pool presented a few challenges, and we started our campaign off with a win and a loss on day one.  The team was upbeat after pushing tournament favourites, Rosmini, for most of the game. The one game on Tuesday was an opportunity to reverse the exchange result earlier in the year, but the close game went Westlake’s way.  Already Jack McManaway, Kaleb Harema and Braydon Iuli were showing out as top scorers.

Day three was very important, as we needed two wins to keep the tournament alive.  Both Otago Boys and St Patricks, Kilbirnie, put up great resistance so the team had to work very hard, but came away with the desired results, placing us 3rd in Pool C. Some impressive dunks were beginning to emerge from some of the younger players in the team, which is exciting for the future.

On day four, we had to play a preliminary quarter final vs Auckland Grammar (2nd Pool A) to progress to the top eight.  This was the highest stakes game of the year for us so far, against a great team with NZ reps. Having recovered sufficiently from the previous night, our fast paced game was too much for AGS, and we crept away to a ten point win.  A great performance from Jeremy McIntosh really helped. Making top eight at this point was a great result and the team were stoked, but we were not finished there. In the afternoon we had “giants” Cashmere in the quarter final who were fresh from a rest that morning.  Once again our game plan proved too much for their bigs, and we lead the game for three quarters, but could not defend a 4th quarter run that saw Cashmere pull back and take out an eventual win. The boys couldn’t contain 6’10” Tom Webley who scored 50 points against us, but gave it their all.

The Napier BHS game was one to forget for a number of reasons, but on the final day we came up against Westlake again for 7th/8th place.  In the end neither team wanted to settle for 8th and fought all the way into overtime, with McManaway scoring 49 points. With half a second on the clock, Westlake took the win with a clutch a 3 pointer, winning 101-99.  It was disappointing for us, but was another great game, which finished off what was a pleasing week for the team, and the second best result at Nationals for TBC.

KPMG INTERNSHIPS
Congratulations to Josh Baxter and Jialan Campbell-Luo who have received offers for internships at KPMG starting in April 2020.  These are highly coveted positions and this is a tremendous opportunity for these young men which enable them to complete their tertiary qualification whilst simultaneously working in one of the worlds Top 4 Accounting firms.
YEAR 13 BUSINESS STUDIES
Year 13 Business Studies students were tasked with setting up and running a sustainable and innovative business throughout the year. During 2019, one of our success stories was Colder Card Holders. This group built on the idea of developing a product that enables students to show their good man qualities through allegiance to Tauranga Boys’ College and support for the Movember Foundation. Having gained permission from both parties to use their branding, the group then went through the business planning, designing and development process, communicating with overseas suppliers to source a product that both they and their customers would be satisfied with. The end results were pleasing, exceeding their initial sales targets, raising $200 for the Movember Foundation and also developing client links for future sales.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT LEAVERS 2019
SPIRIT OF NEW ZEALAND 2019
Year 12 student Caleb Le Pou recently had the privilege of securing a berth on the Spirit of New Zealand as part of the Tuia 250 commemoration.  Caleb and 40 other teenage boys and girls from around New Zealand left the Port of Tauranga on 5th October heading to Whangaparoa Bay.  Duties on the ship involved climbing the shrouds and pulling and easing the ships ropes, night shifts on lookout and raising the anchor.  As they headed towards East Cape and the Port of Gisborne a whale was spotted and dolphins followed the ship as they linked up with waka also travelling towards Gisborne.  Caleb described his time on the Spirit of New Zealand as one of fellowship, bonding and being taken out of his comfort zone!  He was grateful for the support from Blue Light Youth Organisation who assisted him in applying for his berth.
Future Pathways
STP
At the end of term 3 both classes were involved in parent student conferences, focusing on possible future pathways for each student.  Most of the boys will be transitioning into the workforce or will begin their tertiary studies in 2020.  Mr Hind and Mrs Williams' class has been involved in practicing their interview skills with Ms Jones in preparation for job or tertiary course selection and Mr Smith's class has been finishing their various projects - dog kennel, playhouse, ride on mower restoration.
GATEWAY
At the end of Term 3 Mr Sperling's PSK class went out on site to put their learning in context.
The Trades Academy Food Manufacturing course continues, as does the Gateway Chorus course on Tuesday and the flight course on Wednesday afternoons.  The SEEDS Countdown programme is also all go through the 3 local stores.  We even have a student out on the Red Shirts in Schools Gateway programme at The Warehouse, Papamoa.

Seven boys were involved in a speed-meet session with local employers last Thursday, at Otumoetai Atrium Cafe.  Employers from a range of businesses and ITO's were available, looking for prospective employees using a speed dating style.  Matches are then put in touch after the event and potentially job offers are made.

Braydon McClure is enjoying the promotional role he got at NZME after a Gateway placement earlier this year.

CAREERS

Mr Meys has  finished delivering his Yr 10 careers discovery programme and will complete the circuit of classes this term.  Interviews with the Yr 12's will also be completed prior to them going on exam leave in early November.

NEXT STEP

Congratulations to Trey McLeod who left at the end of Term 3 to take up an apprenticeship with Industrial Sheetmetals having had a Gateway placement with them earlier in the year.  We wish him all the best.
