(Only a $10.00 donation!)

Health care coverage is complicated and fees are often hidden. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates employer coverage tops $20,000, according to their annual national employer survey. The average employee contribution for family plan premiums is $6,000. Co-payments, deductibles, and other cost-sharing are additional and highly variable expenses and not factored into the entire cost to families and individuals.

Our Democratic Presidential Candidates have advanced about four different health care options which will be described along with the impact it may have on you and your family. Come to understand and then ask our speakers questions.

Dr Len Kirschner's healthcare leadership & service, nationally, internationally and in AZ, are storied and long. Over the last 40 years he has promoted health access and availability, served on boards as a speaker on Medicare, Medicaid, Managed Care, Mental Health, Disability and Health Care Reform. He will discuss the inadequacy of our nation's healthcare delivery system for many citizens and the options he believes have potential.

Dr Benjamin Fong is a Professor @  ASU's Honor College and is an ardent and accomplished advocate for Single Payer coverage as our system, in his words, is built for profit not care. He has spoken locally and nationally and will define the potential of Medicare for All.

Dr Jonathan Weisbuck has spent more than 40 years of his medical career teaching and advocating for public health as well as participating in government policy development. He has directed the Maricopa County as well as the Los Angeles County Public Health Departments and other public health departments across our nation. He will summarize the choices and the potential impact as well as provide his insights.

There will be a Questions & Answer period after each speaker.

This is a family friendly event. Park in the large lot off Union Hills Dr as well as limited parking off 51st Ave. Tropical SnoCones offered for purchase. Tickets for sale for The Spice of Life mystery basket drawing.

Local and Congressional Candidates will be present before & after the meeting to hear your thoughts.

Speaker Spotlights  - Coming this Month
Adrian Fontes

Maricopa County Recorder, Candidate for County Recorder

Adrian is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served on active duty from 1992 to 1996, and was nominated for a meritorious commission.

His service to our country taught him the importance of dedication, discipline, and sacrifice to forcefully fight for the American dream. After leaving active duty, Adrian received his Bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University before continuing on to the Sturm College of Law at the University of Denver.

Since graduating from law school, Adrian has spent his career advocating for justice and fighting for those who are disadvantaged — first as a prosecutor with the Denver District Attorney and then for the Maricopa County Attorney’s office and the Arizona Attorney General’s office before entering private practice.

As County Recorder, he has worked to bring a renewed energy and vision to the office, with the goal of rebuilding public trust in the election system in Maricopa County. He has focused on the voters’ experience, accountability, and security. Adrian will continue to work to make sure that every Maricopa County citizen who is eligible to vote is able to vote, whether at their kitchen table completing their early ballot or at the booth on Election Day — and that all of their ballots are counted.

Jennifer Samuels
Candidate for Maricopa County Public Instruction

I am a teacher, an activist, a numbers person, a marathon runner, a wife and a mother.

For over a decade, I have taught and volunteered in the public school system where I was born and raised: Maricopa County, Arizona. I earned a Master’s in Special Education and am working on a Master’s in Educational Leadership. My experience includes both general and special education classrooms in the Paradise Valley School District. I’ve been a Coach, an Athletic Director and the Vice President of Desert Springs Preparatory PTA.

Last year, as I addressed the Arizona House Ways and Means Committee, 70,000 educators, parents, and students who rallied at the Capitol. I called out legislators who refused to fund public education in Arizona. “I have ninety students this year,” I said. “I have approximately three minutes with each student each day to give them individual attention […] We need to properly fund education so that our class sizes will go down.”

Two months later, I addressed the House Appropriations Committee, pointing out that “Many, many of my students are reading a few of not several grade levels below where they should be, not because we don’t have highly-qualified, highly-dedicated teachers, but because these kids have slipped through the cracks of overcrowded classrooms.” As the majority in the legislature proved indifferent to the arguments of teachers, parents, and students, I felt dismay, then determination. In 2018, after lawmakers moved forward with a voucher expansion bill that would have bled the education system further, I decided to run for office as a Representative for Legislative District 15. Campaigning for the Legislature deepened my sense for the people of this county and their commitment to public education. I remain committed to my students, making the decision to become their superintendent an easy one.

In my prior career at the second-largest credit union in Arizona, I oversaw large funds, directed revenues, and created and implemented marketing strategies. Because of my extensive experience in the financial services industry and Master’s in Organizational Leadership, I was elected to Arizona Federal’s Board of Directors in 2016 to advocate for financial literacy programs and helped establish policies concerning asset liability and risk management for Arizona Federal’s $1.6 billion budget. Therefore, when I am Superintendent, funding for Maricopa schools will be managed responsibly, with an eye toward increasing opportunity for all students. I’ll also advocate for greater accountability for charter schools in order to protect taxpayers’ investments in education from millionaires.

Nothing worth accomplishing is easy. We face serious challenges as we struggle to re-prioritize public education. The teacher-led movement for change, insisting we change course, inspired most of us—parents, business leaders, and other educational advocates. It won’t be easy but we must continue working toward a repaired school system. Just like a marathon race, I will reach the finish line for my students and colleagues.

Ben and I will celebrate our 14-year wedding anniversary this summer and enjoy raising our three daughters – ages 9, 11 and 13 – who attend our local public schools.

Zoe Stein is the ADP Training Manager! Zoe has lived in Arizona for 8 years and comes from a strong Sustainability and Organizing background. She has a BA and MS in Sustainability Science from Arizona State University’s School of Sustainability.

During the 2018 cycle, Zoe served as the Arizona Organizing Director for Nextgen America. She oversaw a program that registered over 12,000 people to vote, recruited over 1000 unique volunteers and knocked on over 88,000 people's doors with a result of doubled turnout in targeted precincts around Tucson and Tempe and tripled turnout in Flagstaff, compared to 2014. Furthermore, nearly 30% of the 18-29-year-olds who voted early were first-time voters in Arizona!

Zoe is excited and committed to making sure 2020 is even more successful for Democrats and is available to help with all of your skill-building and organizer-training needs! Please feel free to reach out to her.

Upcoming Speakers Feature

Wendy Garcia

Arizona Legislative District #22
2020 Democratic Candidate for the House

Wendy Garcia is running a grass roots campaign to be your next Arizona House Representative for Legislative District 22.  Because she is a Democrat campaigning as a “Clean Elections” candidate, Ms. Garcia will be accountable to the voters; not the special interests, dark money politicians, and corporate lobbyists.  By campaigning “Clean” Wendy will be able to spend more time listening to the voters of Legislative District 22.

Ms. Garcia founded Indivisible Surprise (a local grass roots group).  She also helped organize the Northwest Valley chapter of Save Our Schools.  As an experienced radio broadcaster and news director, she has communicated with members of the Arizona Legislature and the United States Congress to advocate for social justice issues.

Wendy is a fearless activist, leader, and the mother of 2 children (Melody & Michael).  So, she knows the importance of protecting vulnerable people and our rights.  She will serve “by and for the people” of District 22 to restore democracy, improve public schools, expand healthcare coverage, and increase good paying jobs for our community.

Kathleen Honne

Arizona Legislative District #22
2020 Democratic Candidate for the House

Kathleen Honne grew up in rural Southern Arizona.  Participating in 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) programs, she learned the values of citizenship, responsibility, and service to her community; as well as valuable life skills such as clear thinking and healthy living.  Along with those values and skills Kathleen will bring her leadership and experience to the job of representing the voters in the Northwest Valley (Arizona’s Legislative District #22).

Mrs. Honne has worked in education for over 20 years serving as both an assistant principal and a classroom instructor.  She has taught 3rd grade, managed an elementary school with over 900 students, and balanced a multi-million dollar budget.  Kathleen has also successfully written safety grants and advocated for individual students with special needs.  So she knows, first-hand, how to navigate the bureaucratic red-tape and address the challenges we face in getting the politicians down at the Capitol to act for the public good.

During this campaign, as both a Democratic and Clean Elections candidate. Kathleen will address the issues of political corruption, improving student education, healthcare access for all, and making our economy work for everyone.

LD22 - Social Meda Marketing Campaign Update

LD22 is working to expand our reach through social media and we need your help! A strong following will help us to connect quickly to educate voters and provide current information about relevant issues. Additionally we will be better equipped to notify our local community about upcoming fundraising events, club activities, volunteer requests, current legislative issues and much more.

As of the end of September we have a total of 347 followers on our FB page (a 14% increase this month), our posts have reached more than 1800 people in the last month and we have had 805 post engagements (likes, shares and comments)  Thank you all for following, sharing and commenting at #ld22democrats on Facebook.

In October we plan to expand our social media reach to help match volunteers to specific events.  We have been fortunate to have more than 300 people over the past few months indicate an interest in participating as a volunteer with LD22.  Our next step is to work to match volunteers with events and activities.  To help accomplish this we will be generating a weekly needs list to our volunteers by email.  Are you interested in getting this list?  If so sign up here...

Dean's Data Download
This is the second in my series of downloads I offer for your information.  Last month I introduced you to VAN (Voter Activation Network), the online database where we organize most of our voter and volunteer information.  With this database we keep track of voters we call or visit and our volunteers.

During September we continued our Virtual Phone Bank (VPB) featuring volunteers from California.  (A VPB uses a VAN application with your computer or cell phone track results of the call/visit automatically.  If you are familiar with computers, it is easy to use.)

This initiative is designed to promote the Permanent Early Voting List (PEVL).  We made 304 calls and 10 voters agreed to sign-up for PEVL and another 8 stated they may sign-up later.  We recruited one volunteer and three told us they would consider volunteering later.  An early October VPB with our California connection is planned.

I held two VPBs at my house and we made 121 calls recruiting volunteers to events and asking our supporters what volunteer activities they prefer.  This is a huge task and we have around 1,000 people to call.  During October I plan to expand phone calling to both voters and volunteers.  Anyone who is interested in gathering friends and neighbors to their house to make calls either from a paper list or from laptops, please call me at 801-265-9866.

Canvassing, of course, is the very best way to engage voters.  We started our fall canvassing on Saturday, September 28th.  Ten hearty souls participated in this event.  We knocked on 144 doors in Reems and Willow Canyon precincts and talked with 43 voters.  This is a very impressive 30% contact rate.  Twenty of these voters agreed to volunteer as soon as possible, one agreed to volunteer later and another eight would consider volunteering.  During this canvass we promoted our LD22 Democratic Party and 27 people agreed to join us on Facebook and/or Twitter and provide an email address for our monthly newsletter.

We also distributed a flyer for our “YES” initiative (Youth Empowering Society).  These two precincts were used to pilot this initiative which attempts to get high school and our young adult population engaged in activating their neighborhoods by focusing on the gun violence, climate crises and public-school funding issues.  If you know of any youth interested in this initiative, please text “YES” to 801-265-9866.

We again increased the attendance at our monthly meeting with 57 attendees in September plus well over 6 visitors who were obtaining signatures for candidates and the Outlaw Dirty Money initiative.  With the snowbirds starting to flock back to Arizona, we may need to set-up additional seating.  Thank you to everyone who has volunteered over the past month – your efforts our very, very much appreciated.

LD22 Volunteers

JOIN LD22 ARIZONA DEMOCRATS
Help Move Arizona Forward

Become part of a team and help create an Arizona that works for everyone.  The LD22 Democrats are launching an organized effort to recruit and train volunteers to reach out to voters that we have never talked to before across our district.  This is your invitation to join the team. Help move Arizona forward.  Each month we will highlight a volunteer who joined the team and is moving Arizona forward.

Get to know the LD22 volunteers!

  Volunteer Spotlight  -  Lynn Peters

When did you get involved with the Democratic Party and why?

Just like many of us I got involved with the Democratic Party shortly after the 2016 Presidential election. I knew I had to be active to counteract the results of that election.

What type of volunteering activities did you do in the past?
In the past I was not politically active other than always voting. I volunteered with the Friends of the Surprise Libraries at their used book sale in the lobby of the Northwest Reginal Library.

Why is volunteering important to you?
 While I feel it is important to participate in our community, volunteering has personal rewards to me since I retired. I value activities outside of my household and treasure sharing time with likeminded people. I often used to tell people that I have lived in Arizona for 19 years and liked it for the first 5 years. When asked why I always said I couldn’t stand the politics of this state. Since I started volunteering, especially for LD22 and Maricopa County Democratic Party, I am much more comfortable with this state. Working to elect Democrats to local, county and state offices is critical to changing the character of Arizona.

What are your plans for volunteering in 2019?
I plan my volunteer activities based on what LD22 asks for participation. I plan to continue some canvasing, post card writing, phone banking and voter registration. I was very hesitant about both canvasing and phone banking but canvasing with a buddy makes it better for me. Also, I have never had a bad experience canvasing or phone banking. Since I am contacting Democrats, I am meeting more like minded people.

Do you have a favorite volunteering story you want to share?
I do not have one particular favorite volunteering story. All of my Democrat volunteer activities allow me to meet and get to know more like minded people. Post card writing parties at Barbara Nelson’s house are particularly fun.

Are you interested in civic engagement beyond voting?  LD22 has many volunteer opportunities that can fit any schedule.  Check out the volunteer link on our website for more information.

For specific information about current Volunteer opportunities you can also contact Cheri Tomlinson at cheri.tomlinson254@gmail.com or 602.561.9470.

Swing Left Sonoma County (SoCo) is partnering directly with LD-22 Democrats during 2019 and 2020.

SoCo is helping LD22 with conducting Virtual Phone Banking  and canvassing.  The first joint canvassing campaign will be held February 15th – February 17th 2020.  If you are interested in providing housing  or driving for some of the Sonoma County volunteers, please contact Cheri Tomlinson at 602-561-9470

Cheri Tomlinson - LD22 1st Chair

National Voter Registration Day is a holiday celebrated on the fourth Tuesday  of every September. The goal is to focus attention on the importance of registering to vote.

LD22 is proud to report that we partnered with ASU-West Undergraduate Student Government (USG) to register 25 voters in 2 hours on National Voter Registration Day! In addition LD22 has scheduled 11 more voter registration drives at ASU-West this fall.

LD22 October Update!
We have not received any candy donations as of the end of September, but we remain hopeful. If you want to donate you can bring candy to the LD22 monthly meeting on October 17th. or contact Cheri at
cheri.tomlinson254@gmail.com Dont want to donate candy?  That's ok too, we are accepting $5.00 donations toward the purchase of candy for the event online HERE.

Want to Volunteer?  We are seeking volunteers to help us conduct a Voter Registration drive during Boo Bash.  We already have 3 volunteers and need 2 more volunteers for this event.  Please notify Cheri Tomlinson at 602-561-9470 or cheri.tomlinson254@gmail.com

Making it Fun: We are planning either a child activity or a drawing to encourage the adults to complete the Voter Registration or PEVL forms while their child is enjoying Boo Bash.  Please contact Cheri if you are interested in donating $ for the Raffle/Activity.
#On AZ Becoming a Leader …. By Deborah Howard

Meet Deborah Howard… public affairs junkie, never Trumper, storyteller, aspiring citizen of the world. Currently dedicated to turning AZ Blue in 2020 and a volunteer with LD22.

Deborah recently rallied (CD8 Weekly Legislator Rally) in support of state and federal policies to make Arizona a leader, not a laggard, in education. These are a few of the facts that motivated Deborah to organize and join others to rally for education.

  • Arizona ranks 49th for public education in two key metrics — quality and safety. Arizona performs especially poorly in quality measured by median SAT and ACT scores, pupil-to-teacher ratio and dropout rate.
  • The average salary for a new teacher in Arizona is $34,473; the average salary for all teachers is $48,372. According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, adjusted for local cost of living, federal figures show elementary teachers in Arizona actually rank 49th in earnings and high school teachers 48th.
  • And the pay gap of teachers to other professions requiring commensurate levels of education and experience is .67. This is certainly one reason why Arizona faces a teacher shortage. At the start of the 2018 school year there were 1,547 classrooms without an assigned teacher! An additional 663 teachers quit in the first month of school.
  • Despite the slight progress made on the funding issue in 2018, class sizes in Arizona continue to grow. Because the state does not require schools to report class size, the best stand in for this number is the statewide student to teacher ratio.  According to the National Center for Education Statistics, there were 23 students per Arizona teacher in 2016-17 – the nation’s highest. The national average, by comparison, was 16 students. Anecdotally, reports of 40 children per classroom are not uncommon!
Benjamin Franklin noted, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” It is clear for all to see that Arizona’s systemic underfunding of education has failed us. It is time to elect candidates who will fully fund education so that the dividends can be reaped by children and teachers in the classrooms, our communities and workplaces, our research and technology labs, our hospitals, our courtrooms, playhouses and theatres and sports fields, libraries, and certainly not least, our homes.

Summer is gone but the election cycle is just heating up in LD22!

We host weekly protests against our Congressional District 8, Representative. This week we remind our Congresswoman of how her Healthcare voting records adversely impact her constituents.

SAVE THE DATE! Health Care is so important to our constituents

On October 26th, 2019 from 2 PM – 4 PM, LD22 will host a HealthCare Forum 2020 from 2-4 PM at Deer Valley High School,18424 N 51st Ave, Glendale, AZ 85308. Doors open at 1:30 PM. A $10 donation is suggested. Please attend and listen to three national speakers describe the variations and impact of each of our Presidential Candidate’s health care proposals and the impact it may have on you and your family.

If you want to run for a delegate position so as to attend the DNC next summer you will want to attend the Delegate trainings held at Maricopa County Democratic Party. Three trainings are scheduled for October 5th .at 9 am, 10:30 am and Noon time. Sign up here: https://maricopadems.org/dnc-workshop/

At the State Committee meeting in Prescott on September 21st our elected PCs really worked hard. Non-gender bathrooms at Democratic events were approved along with several other resolutions. Sanctioning Senator Kyrsten Sinema was shot down along with the contentious emergency resolution that advanced to allow Independents to vote in Democratic Presidential Preference Election (PPE).

Elected PCs are very important to the Party and the LD. Elected PCs can run to become a Delegate to the DNC next summer. In the LD, without Elected PCs there is no board to be elected and therefore no LD. That’s because only Elected PCs can run for office after the November election in 2020 during the reorganization of the leadership within LD22. In like fashion, all the elected PCs are tasked with electing new leadership in the January 2021 reorganization meetings for both Maricopa County Democratic Party and the Arizona Democratic Party. Elected PCs have a say in our Party leadership. As mentioned above it was the votes of elected PCs that struck down the sanction of Senator Sinema as well as stopping Independents from voting in the PPE unless they change their party to Democrat.

Please “save our schools” by voting YES on all the Bond and Override elections being held in all four of our school districts: Deer Valley Unified, Peoria Unified, Dysart Unified and Nadaburg.

If you are thinking about becoming a Precinct Committee (PC) person NOW is the time to step up.
Precinct Committee people are the most important part of an election! Harry Truman said it was the most important job he ever held!

That’s because PCs:
  • Know more than 90% of the people about the issues, policy, and the impact of what is going on inside the Party and our government;
  • They know our State and National candidates on a personal basis and provide feedback regularly;
  • Bond in a tight knit social network of like-minded individuals who share values and beliefs;
  • Are elected officials of the party;
  • Have a duty is to stay informed;
  • Attend monthly meetings as needed;
  • Support their candidates and the party;
  • Educate Democrat and friendly Independent voters in their precinct;
  • Register people to vote;
  • Are knowledgeable about the machinations of running a campaign and the election process;
  • Canvass, post card writing, phone-banking, and text-banking;
  • Get signatures and $5 donations for Clean Election candidates;
  • Help the LD and the Party to achieve their goals and stay financially solvent in a manner meaningful to them;
  • Have the opportunity to be appointed to a local, county or state board or commission;
  • Attend and hold candidate events or house parties;
  • Help Get Out the Vote (GOTV)!
In other words, there are exciting things to learn and do even if you never want to serve as an elected official or on a board or commission!

Since January of 2019 there have been 8 new PCs join our LD. These are appointed PCs who can become elected after obtaining 10 signatures from fellow Democrats in their precinct during the next election cycle. Welcome to our new PC’s: Bob Wall, Lois Bernstein, Georgia Cutburth, Manny Hernandez, Peggy Robinson, Teri Sarmiento, George Calafine and Doni Booher!

New PC’s can access training from the comfort of home by going to the AZ Democratic Party training portal. https://academy.azdem.org

LD22 has 312 openings for PCs but only 48 current PCs. There’s a place for you in our LD. Help us move the needle for candidates. Because LD22 had over an 82% voter turn out in 2018 you saw our Democratic candidates win once they completed counting the ballots. Please reach out to bobbie.kithcart@gmail.com if you’re interested.
