Forest Park News

From Principal Lisa Newlyn

10/07/2019

This week you'll see a new face in the front car line.  No light saber for Ms. Meyer, but I'm pretty sure she does have The Force.  I"m out of the office taking care of my mom who is entering an assisted living residence.  Kris Meyer, former Ainsworth Elementary Principal, is here for me through the end of the week.  If you email, you'll see my out of office reply.  Please know I am checking on things from time to time, but have full confidence that Ms. Meyer will have business well in hand while I'm away.

I will be attending the upcoming FOFPE Meeting, and encourage all of you to attend as well.  Scott Bailey, PPS School Board Director, is joining us as we advocate for the 2020 Bond.  Please plan to join us, October 10 @ 6:30pm in the FPE Library.

We had a great turn out for Volunteer Orientation this past Friday.  Thank you all 40 of you for coming and getting high level information from me on the ins and outs of an FPE Parent Volunteer!  For those who missed, please review the PPS Website for Background Check and more: https://www.pps.net/volunteer

I'm looking forward to sharing high level information with our community next week, at the Fall State of the School Address, 10/15/19 @ 6:30pm, followed by TAG Parent Night led by Ms. Axon @ 7:15pm.  FPE has lots to celebrate as well as goals to focus on to continue our success.  Take a look at FPE Mission, Vision, and Goals for 2019-2020.

Thanks to everyone who has given their $110 donation for school supplies!  We are nearly at our goal of 100% school-wide.  Your $110 goes towards school supplies ($50), classroom field trips ($35) and online tools (Freckle/Typing Agent, $25).  Did you know your donation is tax deductible and qualifies for company matching?!  (See blurb, below.)

There's lots more to know about life in the land of Forest Park; read on below.

Warmly,
Lisa Newlyn, Principal

News from the Forest Park Library

OBOB Sign-Up Forms will be going out next week. Students will fill out the form with the four team members filled and signed by parents before returning it to the library. Each OBOB participant will fill out a form, get it signed, and return the form to the library. I have been giving book talks on the OBOB Titles and covered Aru Shah and the End of Time, Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, and Riding Freedom so far. I have explained to the 3rd Grade Classes what OBOB is, how to form teams, and answered many questions. There is a lot of excitement!

Please attend the OBOB Parent Night October 17th @ 6:30 in the Cafeteria followed by BookFair Shopping Night in the Gym.

TAG News from Laura Axon, FPE TAG Facilitator

Greetings Parents and Students of FPE,

Portland Public Schools is testing every 2nd grader in the district to screen for students who have high reasoning and problem-solving abilities. The NNAT3 (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, 3rd Edition) is a tool used to help identify Intellectually Gifted students in the district. The test takes only about 30 minutes to complete, and it will allow for identification and services to begin much sooner than with tests previously used.

Forest will be testing 2nd graders during the month of  October in their classrooms. We are waiting to hear from the district proctor when our date will be. The NNAT assessment timeline is from September 23rd to October 25th.  2nd grade parents will be notified when testing will take place. In order for your student to have the opportunity to be assessed, please make sure that your child is at school and on time on their scheduled testing date (TBA).

TAG Parent Night will be October 15 @ 6:30 following the State of the School Address. Information about TAG Identification Processes, Communication Processes, and Services will be presented.

Be sure to complete the survey that was sent by the TAG Dept. in early September.. It is available in multiple languages in the survey link. By completing the  survey  you and your child will be informing classroom teacher(s) to better plan for meeting your child’s needs this school year. It is also a way for you to provide specific input.

You can expect occasional updates here in the FPE Newsletter and on the TAG Bulletin Board just outside the interior cafeteria doors.

Important Dates:

  • TAG Nomination forms - IDPFs - due November 26, 2019.

  • 2nd Grade NNAT3 testing window October, 2019

  • TAG Parent night and State of the School Address, 10/15/2019 @ 6:30pm

Please contact me regarding TAG related questions concerns (laxon@pps.net).

Math Team Kick Off Meeting for Parents:  10/10 @ 6:30pm - 7:30pm @ FPE
Parents! Now is your chance to sign your child up for Forest Park Elementary’s Math Team! The team is open to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders that want to brush up on existing skills, and be introduced to new topics that aren’t covered in the standard curriculum. But mainly it’s about having fun with math. (And don’t worry: your kid doesn’t have to be a math genius to participate: it’s open to everyone, all skill levels.)

Students, talk to you friends and form your own team. Each math team will be run by a volunteer parent as team lead. Weekly practices are expected outside of school. FPE Math Club organizers will supply material for practices.

FPE Math Club will organize school teams to participate national math tournaments. Some tournaments may only open to 4th and 5th graders. Participation in math tournaments is voluntary but encouraged. Stay tuned for the incoming tournament information.

This year, Math Club will run from early Nov. 2019 - middle April 2020.

Registration is closed by 10/11.

Employer Matching Programs

You can effectively double your donations to both Forest Park Elementary and the Friends of Forest Park Elementary if your employer maintains a donation matching program. Many companies will match contributions to 501(c)(3) organizations such as the Foundation. These donations can be made as a one-time gift or as an ongoing monthly donation.
Generally, the employee needs to get a matching donation form from his or her company’s Human Resources Dept. The employee then submits his/her initial donation and form to FPE/FOFPE (this can be done separately, so even if you've already contributed it's not too late to ask your company to match!). We will confirm the receipt of your donation and send the completed form to the employer.  Submitting your donation for employer matching allows you to DOUBLE your positive effect on our school; certainly that is worth a little paperwork.
