Dear fellow EU citizen,

Firstly, let me apologise for not sending a weekly newsletter in September. I hope you could follow the news on social media or through the traditional news channels and we are resuming more regular communications from now on.

The second part of August and September have been the most intense months of campaigning since we started the3million in July 2016 so this is a bumper edition.

We are now less than a month away from Brexit in the event no extension is agreed between the UK and the EU and the uncertainty we have experienced since June 2016 is at its peak.

The impact on the morale and spirit of EU citizens in the UK is detrimental to their mental health, but I can only praise you and everyone I know for putting a brave face on it despite the political chaos and the lack of certainty over our rights if we leave on October 31st.

The purpose of the3million is to give a voice to the disfranchised, to empower us to have a say in our future and to give us hope that the country we call home will treat us like first-class citizens after the chaos of the Brexit negotiations.

Activism is undoubtedly a way to lift the doom and feel you are part of a positive movement driven by one message: this is our home; share the love!

I hope you can join us on Saturday 12th October in London for the stunt followed by the rally for our rights, and if you can afford it, attend our awards dinner next Tuesday 8th.

European regards,

Nicolas

Awards evening with Gina Miller, Alberto Costa and David Schneider next week

Since 2016, the3million has mostly fundraised using crowdfunding sites or asking people to become supporters with a monthly Direct Debit, and we are grateful for your trust in us to run the campaign for our rights.

We also obtained grants from foundations who care about us (more details on our About us page), but some of these grants are ending in December. Therefore, we are organising our very first awards evening at the trendy London restaurant Gezellig next Tuesday to fundraise for our 2020 campaign.

It’s going to be an entertaining evening with our host comedian David Schneider and special guests Gina Miller, Alberto Costa MP, Claude Moraes MEP, Stuart McDonald MP and French Sénateur Olivier Cadic.

We have nearly sold out and only 10 tickets are remaining so please book yours at t3m.org.uk/awards (ticket price starts at £90)

You can also take part in our online Fundraiser where you can bid on exclusive items: we have Axel Scheffler's #Brusselo & original drawing, memorabilia by @usainbolt @Cristiano @TheRealBuzz @MikeTyson @LeoDiCaprio @edsheeran @LewisHamilton @andy_murray & more.

the3million's voting rightscampaignn

The Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust offered the3million a grant in July to run a focused campaign on maintaining the existing voting rights of EU citizens in the UK, as well as extending the franchise so we could vote in General Elections and referenda.

We got our first win at the Labour Party conference. We worked with the Labour Campaign for Free Movement to make the franchise based on residence rather than nationality and we won. The motion passed unanimously, and it’s now Labour policy. This is one significant step towards the correction of one of the greatest democratic scandals of our times.

1.7 million EU citizens have applied for Settled Status so far

With no-deal high on the political agenda, a record number of EU citizens have applied for Settled Status since August. While the Home Office is celebrating the high number of applicants (so far, 1.7 million people have applied), the3million remains concerned about the scheme.

In July, 42% of applicants didn’t get Settled Status and were granted pre-Settled Status. This lesser status was designed for those who haven’t lived in the UK for five years but is increasingly granted to long term residents who were not found by the automated checks by the settlement scheme and who struggled to provide the evidence the Home Office is requesting.

Because all these people will need to apply again for Settled Status within five years, this is a time bomb as there is no guarantee they will be granted Settled Status the next time they apply.

We at the3million have warned the Home Office as early as 2017 about the danger of having an application scheme with a deadline (currently end of December 2020) and we are continuing to campaign for a simple registration system like in other EU member states (also called a declaratory system) and the provision of a physical document rather than a digital token, so we can feel reassured we can evidence our status to anyone by merely presenting our physical document.

Please support the campaign for a simple registration and physical documents by writing to your MP today

No-deal statement

Talking of no-deal, the3million has issued a statement to oppose a no-deal scenario, because of its impact on our lives in the UK. See it here.

Party conferences

the3million is non-partisan and works with members of political parties across the spectrum so our rights can be protected.

This year, we organised four fringe events to build and maintain working relationships in all leading parties and promote the protection of our rights:

Liberal Democrats

Cristina Tegolo (the3million and a Lib Dem councillor) ran a fringe event at the beginning of September with Layla Moran MP, Irina von Wiese MEP, Councillor Andy Kelly (Greater Manchester mayoral candidate 2020) and Ilse Mogensen (the3million) about citizens’ rights, reporting on the work on the European Parliament elections and voting rights.

Labour Party

Last week, we discussed citizens’ rights and what would Labour do in Governmentwith Paul Blomfield MP, Claude Moraes MEP, Allison Roche (UNISON), Ilse Mogensen (the3million) and Alexandra Bulat (the3million; Young Europeans).

In a separate fringe event organised by Another Europe is Possible, Dimitri Scarlato spoke alongside Laura Palmer (Momentum) to promote voting rights for all residents, the day before the motion was passed unanimously.

Conservative Party

Last night, I chaired a panel with Christopher Chantrey of British in Europe, Alberto Costa MP, Sajjad Karim MEP, Sunder Katwala (British Future) and Alexandra Bulat (the3million, Young Europeans) calling the Government to make Settled Status declaratory and issue physical documents to those who have the status.

Alberto Costa called EU citizens to write to their MP about the issue and Sajjad Karim revealed that the EU27 member states are preparing a unified set of rules for Brits in Europe in case of no-deal Brexit.

SNP

We have a fringe event at the SNP conference on 14 October. The event is chaired by Christian Allard MEP, with Ben Macpherson MSP, Minister for Europe, Migration and International Development, Philippa Whitford MP, Nicolas Hatton (the3million) and Mireille Pouget (the3million). Please note this event is within the Conference, and you need a pass to get into the fringe event

Green Party

We will also attend the Green Party conference on 4-6 October as we have an excellent relationship with Caroline Lucas, Siân Berry AM, Jonathan Bartley and Molly Scott-Cato MEP.

Europe Street News survey

Journalist Claudia Delpero at Europe Street News just published a survey on EU citizens, Brexit and Settled Status. Our researcher Kuba Jablonowski was in the team of researchers, and the findings are a must-read for anybody interested in the subject.

The headline is  that the lack of information, protection and political representation is fuelling anxiety among EU citizens in the UK.

Discover the new charity Settled

While the3million campaigns for the protection of our rights every day, our work would not be complete if the most vulnerable EU citizens in the UK could not gain the status which will keep them safe as UK residents after Brexit.

This is why Chris Desira (Seraphus Solicitors), Jen Ang (Just Rights Scotland), Katia Widlak (UNISON community organiser and chair of the3million), Martine Petetin (retired lawyer), Mihai Bica (Roma Support Group) and I created a new charity called Settled to focus on reaching out to hard-to-reach vulnerable EU citizens in the UK.

Our motto is Inform, Guide, Assist. We aim at building a network of volunteers nationwide called the Settled Status Angels, so no one is left behind. We welcome volunteers who have experience in working with vulnerable people in the community.

For more details, visit the Settled website.

Eurochildren

the3million is delighted to support Nando Sigona’s essential academic research work Eurochildren on the impact of Brexit on EU citizens. We took part in the research thanks to Anne-Laure Donskoy, and we are pleased the research was presented in Edinburgh last month.

I would encourage you to visit the Eurochildren website to see case studies, testimonials and short videos with interviews and analysis.
