Do You Need

Supplements?

It’s no big surprise that a new report says we are on track to reach $220 Billion in global supplement sales by the year 2022.  With many people electing to use them, how do you know if supplements are right for you?

It's worth discussing what is meant by supplements.  These may be preparations from foods, herbs, plant/mineral/animal substances or be a synthetic product that does not exist in nature (which may be of natural ingredients).  For example, Vitamin D is a hormone made from the fat of lamb's wool or extracted from plant sterols, that does not exist in such concentrations naturally but has daily use by many Americans (did you know it is best taken with Magnesium?). I personally am a big fan of “food-first” principles of healing, followed by the supportive use of whole-food supplements vs synthetic vitamins.

New studies sometimes support the traditional use of foods or herbs, such as matcha (green) tea benefitting anxiety, Maca for sexual health or Ashwaghanda for reducing stress and anxiety. These could be called a supplement or simply a part of a traditional diet.

Research may demonstrate how supplements are not effective for a particular use, such as this study showing supplements do not benefit cardiovascular disease or this study on supplements not affecting our mortality.  Confusingly, research many also show the exact opposite conclusion, such as glucosamine supplementation reducing cardiovascular disease risk by 15%.

Finally, the quality of supplements is in question based on the standards of the company that produce them.  This is why many people are electing to go to third-party-certified supplements, such as those that I use in my professional practice. CBD from cannabis is a perfect example.  There are many companies jumping on the legalization bandwagon with less regard to quality or safety and more regard to profit. Some companies such as WASU (which I use in my practice) are electing to create their own standards and certify their products with outside laboratory testing.

The bottom line is that taking nutritional supplements are a personal decision that should be taken with the aid of a qualified provider.  I recommend that you do your homework, consult with your favorite healthcare professional and get the specific help that you need.  I am happy to assist you.
