Rideshare Week Enhances Community by Encouraging both Social and Active Transportation Choices

Pledge to make a smart commute choice at least once during Rideshare Week for the chance to win $500.
San Luis Obispo, Calif. (October 3, 2019) – From October 7th  through 11th, hundreds of San Luis Obispo County commuters will choose to leave their cars at home to take part in this year’s Rideshare Week, an annual event hosted by the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments’ Rideshare Division. For many commuters, this fun and free event will demonstrate that transit, carpool, vanpool, biking, and walking are viable alternatives to driving alone.

Curb the car and celebrate Rideshare Week knowing that your actions will encourage sustainable, alternative modes of transportation that will help our region reduce air pollution and traffic congestion, promote safety and good health, and foster a safer and more inclusive community. Rideshare Week invites you to explore other ways of getting from A to B by pledging to try something new—PLUS, you could win up to $500 per challenge! Promotions to use during Rideshare Week include $2 rides and a $0.54 per mile incentive for drivers using the Waze Carpool app and free transit days on SLO Transit, Morro Bay Transit, and RTA buses. Learn more on our Rideshare Week webpage.

“Events like Rideshare Week not only bring the community together, but also promote healthier, more sustainable options for commuting to work,” said Rideshare Program Manager Mallory Jenkins. “Rideshare Week is a fun way for participants to test a commute option they’ve never tried before, encouraging them to make alternative transportation choices more often.”

Last year, the event reduced our region’s vehicle miles traveled (VMT) by 92,917 miles. This year, we invite you to join your neighbors and coworkers in a smart commute option and help us reduce VMT by 100,000 miles next week. Get the celebration started by joining SLOCOG’s Rideshare Division for one of three PARK(ing) events this Friday, October 4th. These events convert parking spaces to temporary parklets—complete with grass, games, and music—to show some of the ways communities can use public space when they do not use it for parking.

Join us at these locations on Friday, October 4th to kick-off Rideshare Week:
  • Big Sky Café, San Luis Obispo from 11:30am-1:30pm, w/ Mayor Harmon @ 12:30
  • Branch Street Deli, Arroyo Grande Village from 11:30am-1:30pm
  • California Polytechnic State University (parking lot by Kennedy Library @ Dexter Lawn), San Luis Obispo from 11:30am-1:30pm

SLO Regional Rideshare wants to remind commuters that Rideshare Week is not about a specific travel mode; it’s a movement that recognizes making better healthy, resource-conscience, money-saving habits. Commuters can explore alternatives to driving alone, compare their commute costs, and measure their environmental impact using the 5-1-1 trip planner on the homepage at Rideshare.org.
