Exams:
What exams are required for the UCSB Teacher Education Program?
There are two state requirements needed for entrance to the program: the Subject Matter Competency Requirement and the Basic Skills Requirement. These are most commonly fulfilled by specific exams.
The CSETs (California Subject Examinations for Teachers) are the most common way to fulfill the state of California's Subject Matter Competency Requirement. This requirement measures your knowledge of the content you will be teaching. The Subject Matter Competency Requirement can be completed by taking either the specific CSET subtests for your credential or through an approved undergraduate waiver program.
The CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test) is the most common way to fulfill CA's Basic Skills Requirement. This requirement measures your basic knowledge of math, reading, and writing. The Basic Skills Requirement can be fulfilled using one of the five options:
- CBEST exam
- CSET subtests 101, 103, 142, & 214
- Qualifying scores on the CSU Early Assessment Program or CSU Placement Exams
- Qualifying scores on the SAT or ACT
- Qualifying scores on specific AP tests
Please see page 10 of our Application Handbook for more information on these options and the specific CSETs needed for your credential.
What is the deadline for CSET and CBEST exams?
Please have the CBEST passed by the application deadline (January 31, 2020).
Please have the CSET subtests taken by the application deadline. Contact the TEP Office if you run into scheduling conflicts.
I did not pass one of my CSET subtests. What should I do?
Retake the subtest as soon as possible. It is not uncommon for students to need to retake at least one subtest, so make sure to study diligently for each subtest to save your future self time and money.
Is the GRE required?
As of this application cycle, the GRE is not required for admission to UCSB's Teacher Education Program!
My Electronic Application (eApp):
Do I answer the eApp Statements & Supplemental Documents essay prompts?
No; you will answer TEP-specific prompts listed beneath Statement of Purpose and Personal Achievements and Contributions on page 7 of our Application Handbook. Please note that the prompts differ depending on which program you are applying to.
I don't see the "Submit" button to pay for and submit my application.
The button will appear when you have completed all required sections of the application. You can continue to work on the Supplemental Documents and Letters of Recommendation sections even after you have paid and submitted your application, provided you do not "lock" those sections.
Miscellaneous:
What are the items you require and how should I keep track of them?
Our requirements can be found and checked off as completed on the Supplemental Documents Checklist. This is a useful checklist that you will upload to the eApp itself (in the Statements and Supplemental Documents section) so we can also see that you have taken the necessary steps. You may also view our Application Handbook for more details on each required component and when they are due.
Should I have majored in Education as an undergraduate to qualify for the program?
No. What matters is that you verify your subject matter competence. We have stories of students who studied Business and became History teachers, lawyers who became Math teachers, and dance instructors who became elementary school teachers. These are educators who can explain concepts to a new learner because they think critically about how to teach themselves. Who you are, entirely, will benefit your teacher identity in the classroom.
When is the final application deadline?
11:59 PM PST on Friday, January 31, 2020
Who can I ask for help with the application process?
The TEP Office, of course! You can reach us at (805) 893-2084, by email at tepapp@education.ucsb.edu, or by attending an Information Meeting on campus (dates below).
