So You Thought You Knew Suffolk?

Join us and put your local knowledge to the test in the
Save Our Suffolk Estuary Pub Quiz.

As part of the Save Our Suffolk Estuary fundraising campaign we are organising our second pub quiz and would love you to get involved.

Taking place on Friday 22nd November, the parallel pub quiz is being held across 14 venues from Thorpeness to Orford. With a surprise local 'celebrity' quiz master at each pub, it's going to be a jolly, relaxed evening with prizes for the winning team.

Entry is £5 per person with teams of up to 8 people. Why not get together a team of friends, family or colleagues (or we can put you in a team on the night) and fundraise to help protect our beautiful Suffolk estuary landscape from flooding?

Thanks to our local event sponsors, Best Of Suffolk and Pinney's Of Orford, 100% of the funds raised from the pub quiz will be used towards vital flood defences along the estuary, for which we are enormously grateful.

If you would like to enter the pub quiz please go to the Events page of our website HERE. The number of places at each venue is strictly limited (one venue is already fully booked!), so please don't delay.

Estuary update from

Giles Bloomfield
Eastern Area Manager
East Suffolk Internal Drainage Board
The East Suffolk Internal Drainage Board (ESIDB) is working closely with Environment Agency officers to ensure the business case for works at Snape Village and Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh and Iken is presented to the national Large Project Review Group with the best possible chance of success. This is the first stage in gaining consent for the upgrading work to the river walls. The cost of this stretch is £8.4 million. It may take some 6-9 months for the business case to navigate the Environment Agency scrutiny process.

The Government contribution, should this be allocated if the project gains consent, is potentially up to £7 million. There is currently no available Flood Defence Grant in Aid (FDGiA) funding until 2021, unless unspent funds are reallocated at the end of their financial planning period. Should the project be allocated funds for 2021, it may be possible to begin work earlier using funds from the community.

The whole estuary will take some 7-8 years to complete.
Flotilla Fundraising Update
With the final sponsorship money now received and counted, we can confirm over £26,000 was raised at our Aldeburgh to Orford flotilla in July! Huge thanks once again to all the participants, sponsors and volunteers who supported this special community event along the estuary.

Looking ahead to 2020, the date for next year's flotilla is likely to be Saturday 12th September, as this is the only weekend when the tide is turning during the morning when the river has few boats sailing. Further details will follow.
Charity Christmas Cards

Available to purchase from Aldeburgh Bookshop and Snape Maltings, please support the Trust this Christmas with our packs of 6 charity Christmas cards.

Featuring two festive water images, one is by Suffolk based artist Annabel Gault and called Stars Over Sea.

The other, by printmaker Henrietta Villiers who lives in Aldeburgh, is titled Moonlit River.

Each pack contains 3 of each design and costs £6.00, with £1.50 from the sale of each pack being donated to The Alde & Ore Estuary Trust. Measuring 5" x 7”, the inside of each card reads: With best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

Please pop in to Aldeburgh Bookshop on call them 01728 452389 if you wish to purchase these cards over the telephone and have them posted out to you.

Thanks to Aldeburgh Bookshop, Orwell Press and Herring Bone Design for their support in producing these charity Christmas cards.

Pioneering Collaboration For Flood Prevention

A meeting of some of the most senior utility directors in the UK took place at Snape Maltings recently, hosted by Suffolk Coastal MP Therese Coffey.

The Alde & Ore Estuary Partnership together with the Alde & Ore Estuary Trust called for the meeting to ensure all stakeholders in the region with interests in areas at risk of flooding were fully aware of the proposed works and to understand opportunities for partnership working and funding bids.

Representatives from Anglian Water, Essex and Suffolk Water, EDF and UK Power Networks joined the discussion with the Environment Agency, New Anglia LEP, CEFAS and East Suffolk Internal Drainage Board, which has been commissioned to complete the upgrading of the river walls.

Community Fundraising & Events

The Trust is always very grateful for donations made from the community. In 2019 we have received gifts through the sale of Orford honey, an Aldeburgh marmalade making competition and of course of the summer flotilla where swimmer Caroline Gill goes to the top of the class for raising the most sponsorship.

Our 'Perfect Storm' float, was created by volunteers in the movie-themed Aldeburgh Carnival this year. Inspired by the photo taken in 1953 of Hector Burrell rowing down a flooded Aldeburgh High Street, it served as a reminder that we need to keep boats off our streets by ensuring our estuary flood defences are repaired and maintained in readiness for the next 1-in-200 year tidal surge, or perfect storm.
