Healthy Celebration Season!
As we move into the fall season, most of us have holidays and celebrations we look forward to. Celebrations give us an opportunity to gather with friends and family to share in cultural traditions and meals together. Because we tend to enjoy these events frequently around this time of year, it is important that we find ways to maintain our healthy eating patterns at the same time.
  • Celebrate with festive, colourful vegetables and fruit! Include dishes with seasonal items like sweet potatoes, beets, apples, pears and cranberries for a vibrant theme that is packed with nutrients.
  • Arrange colourful sliced vegetables and fruit into fun, festive shapes like an ornament, snowman, tree or star. You can even try making simple themed vegetable or fruit kabobs.
  • Be mindful. Continue to practice good eating skills such as paying attention to when you are hungry or full and making half your plate vegetables and fruits. Also be mindful of drink choices. Sticking to water as your drink of choice can help to reduce added sugar in your meals.
  • Focus on fun instead of food! There are so many fun and healthy ways to celebrate. Make a fun holiday craft, play a game or plan a fun outing. Visit to the pumpkin patch, ice skating or even a snowman-building competition as part of your holiday celebrations! Be sure to bundle up and use appropriate safety equipment, like helmets and pads.
