Notes from the principal

Dear Inlet View Families,

September was a busy month at Inlet View! All students participated in fall benchmark assessments FastBridge for grades K-2 and MAP for students in grades 3-6.

I’m excited to see the growth students are making in all areas, but even more excited about what each class has worked on the first unit of inquiry “Who we are”. Make sure you ask your child what things they’ve learned and what actions they’re taking to demonstrate the attributes of the learner profile “caring” at home, at school, and in the community.

October and November are going to be busy and important months for our school. Harvest Festival is around the corner, Saturday Oct 19th. Parent/Teacher Conferences will happen the week of October 23 and 24. Make sure you schedule your child’s conference online. Mark your calendars! You don’t want to miss any events.

Temperatures are dropping down. Make sure your child wears appropriate gear for the weather. We have some extra coats, hats, and gloves your child can use. Let us know if you need help with that.

As always, thank you for entrusting your child’s education to us.

I hope to see many of you during Parent/ Teacher Conferences and Harvest Festival.

Best,
Mrs. Ahrens

Reminders

APD Information: Illegal Use of Handheld Devices in School Zones
This APD NIXLE might be good information to pass along to parents in newsletters:

As of June 20, 2019 handheld cell phone use is illegal in active school zones and/or upon school grounds. If caught violating this new ordinance, the fine is a big one: 6 points on driver’s license and a $500 fine. Here are the pertinent points to know regarding AMC 9.28.055(E)(1):

  • This law is in effect 6am – 9pm seven days a week, 365 days a year.
  • This law applies to all signed school zones where the speed limit is 25 mph.
  • This law applies to all school zones where there are temporary speed reductions to 20 mph or less (the school zones with the yellow flashing lights).
  • This law does NOT apply to vehicles that are stopped (ex: parked in a school parking lot) or if the mobile device is being used hands-free.
  • If a person in violation of this ordinance also causes a collision that results in injury or death, the penalty for this ordinance becomes a misdemeanor.

The District has also created an information page on the ASD Family Involvement webpage that provides more details

There's still Wednesday October 9th left for your flu shot.

National School Lunch Week October 14-18
Student Nutrition will be participating in National School Lunch Week October 14–18, which includes inviting parents to “Take Your Parent to Lunch Day” on October 16.  Parents are encouraged to join their students for lunch to better understand how ASD’s nutrition program helps serve students and the community. When parents visit their child’s cafeteria, they will learn about the current service and future plans to improve food service in the District. Parents will be receiving an email invitation to attend and will receive a complimentary lunch if they RSVP online by Thursday, October 10.  The RSVP grants one parent a complimentary lunch; additional parents and individuals who do not RSVP by the deadline will receive a $1 discount.
Saludos desde la aula de Espanol
Students are expanding their emotional vocabulary from just muy bien, asi asi y muy mal to include much more. Ask your kiddo to share how they are feeling today by asking ¿Cómo estás? or ¿Qué tal?

Our theme of ¿Quiénes somos? or Who we are is expanding to our likes and dislikes. Also known as ¡Si me gusta! or No, no me gusta. Practice by asking, ¿Te gusta ___? if it's a plural like bananas you can ask, ¿Te gustan las bananas?

In the month of October we will be practicing the fun trabalenguas 'Cuando cuentas cuentos'.
Take a look and practice at home too! Cuando cuentas cuentos cuenta cuantos cuentas por que si no los cuentas no sabrás cuantos contaste.

Sept 15- Oct15th is National Hispanic Heritage Month.  Please consider taking time to learn more about a local hispanic restaurant, musical group, educational opportunity such as with Anaya Cuban Dance studios or even the FREE concert this Sunday October 6th at 4:30pm at one of our neighborhood churches. Anchorage Lutheran Church is hosting an Afro-Cuban Latin Jazz concert Sunday October 6th @ 4:30pm for FREE. Consider attending, I hope to see you there!
Greetings from the Library

Library is off to a great start!  I enjoy working with your children every week.

The library is a great place for your student to find books that they want to read.

I am here to help them find what interests them.

Here is a general schedule of when classrooms have their library class:

Monday – Stanton, Ashworth, Gamble

Tuesday – Campbell, Vaaia, Kemp

Wednesday – Hamre, Dente

Thursday – Thatch, Mendoza

Friday –Park, Vaaia, Kemp

Your child enjoys their library time much more when they have their previous books returned and are prepared to checkout a different book.

There is also open library checkout most days from 9:00- 9:30 and 3:00 – 3:30.

This time is available at the discretion of the classroom teachers.

Overdue notices will be distributed the first Wednesday of every month.  Please keep a lookout for them.  I also remind students on a weekly basis when they attend library class.

Battle of Books will begin at the end of October.  I will be presenting information concerning this statewide reading program to all classes grades 3rd – 6th as the time draws nearer.

News from the café
  • Parents need to re-apply every year for free and reduced lunch even if you were approved last year.

  • Students need to have money on their accounts for milk even if the student does not eat school lunch.

  • Parents please email cafe_inletview@asdk12.org if you do not want the cafe manager to serve food, and also if you are ok with more than one meal or milk for your student(s).
Greetings from Mrs. Gamble

There's two pictures of Mrs. Gamble's class accompanying the kindergarten classes to the fish hatchery in Anchorage.

And there's two pictures of Lucy and myself (daughter Lucy) with Etta, a student who moved from Inlet View to live in Yosemite National Park with her parents! I was there with our family to take part in the Hike for Cure event that benefits the histioCURE Foundation, and we literally ran into her while eating pizza! Haha.

It's pretty neat to see a student from IV now living there.
News from the art room
Hello Inlet View Community- We have an art IDEA!!!

Save your plastic bottle caps this whole school year!

All sizes and colors!

Before you toss it in the garbage, consider saving it to ReUse for an art project.

Water & juice, laundry soap and coffee containers all have plastic lids. Peanut butter and Gatorade too! Please collect these at home in a bag or jar, and when that is full, bring into school and empty into the art room collection bin.

When we have enough caps, we will turn them into an art project!!!!

Looking forward to seeing how many Inlet View community can collect.

PTA Information

IMPORTANT PTA MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION:

The Inlet View PTA is updating our directory and continuing our membership drive for the 2019-2020 school year.

The total dues per year per member is $10, which includes $2.25 for national dues; $4.00 for state dues; and $3.75 to help defray the costs of running our local PTA. You can submit this amount to your child's class or use the drop box in the school office.  We can also invoice, so email us and let us know the amount that you would like to be invoiced for.

We believe that the more people who participate, the better. That's why the PTA will pay the dues for any parent who needs it - just let us know!

If you don't want to be a "dues paying member" you can still participate in any meetings (but not vote on motions) or stay on the contact list to be in the loop on what is happening with the PTA and at the school, this includes any PTA run club registration info, volunteer opportunities and information about upcoming events.

Please take a moment to let us know whether you want to be on our list and, if you were last year, let us know if there are any changes to the information we have on file (name, contact info, etc.). If you are a new member and would like to be included in the Inlet View Elementary directory, please provide: first and last name, child's name and grade and any contact information you would like to include (address, email address, phone number).

Please email inletviewpta@gmail.com the info above and choose an option below.

__ I DO want to be a member of the PTA and will pay the annual dues of $10 per member

__ I DO want to be a member and ask the PTA to cover the annual dues for the member(s) listed below

__ I do NOT want to be a "dues paying" member of the PTA, but would like to stay on the directory and contact list

__ Please remove my name from your contact list
