Hi Everyone,

Let's just dive right in with the update you've all been waiting for...

This year's fundraising cap is $20,000!

This amount balances the growing number of NewsMatch participants with a meaningful match for everyone and additional bonuses for small and medium newsrooms.

Scroll down below for information on bonuses, but we'd like to take a moment to express our gratitude to the coalition of funders behind this year's campaign.

Thank you to Knight Foundation, Democracy Fund, Facebook Journalism Project, Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, Jonathan Logan Family Foundation, Present Progressive Fund at Schwab Charitable, Natasha and Dirk Ziff, REI Co-op and the Gates Family Foundation.

Goal-Based Bonuses

Participants with a 2018 budget of $2 million or less are eligible to receive bonuses for reaching certain goals. When you submit your match data, we will ask if you would like to be considered for one or more of these bonuses:
  • We had more individual donors in 2019 than 2018
    • (Eligibility: 2018 budget of $2 million or less)
  • We had 100 new donors during NewsMatch 2019, Nov. 1 to Dec. 31
    • (Eligibility: 2018 budget of $2 million or less)
  • We participated in NewsMatch 2018 and raised more in NewsMatch 2019
    • (Eligibility: Participated in 2018 but did not hit the match cap)
The Fine Print
We have a comprehensive list of FAQ's on NewsMatch.org, but here are the top questions we get about what type of gifts count towards the $20,000.

How much will be matched?
NewsMatch will match up to $1,000 per donor to participating organizations. The maximum amount you can receive from the match pool is capped based on the size of the NewsMatch fund and the number of participating organizations.

What is the eligible donation time period for the match?
Donations received from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31 are eligible for the match. Unfulfilled pledges and donations dated after Dec. 31 are not eligible.

What determines the date of donation?
Either the date on the check or the date of the online donation as time-stamped by your system.

If someone makes a donation larger than $1,000, can we can count the first $1,000 toward NewsMatch?
Yes.

How does the new member bonus work?
All participants are eligible for the new member bonus, which makes new recurring donations started during NewsMatch eligible to be matched at their full-year value. For example, a new $10/month donation that starts in December 2019 will be eligible for a $120 match. Existing recurring donations received during NewsMatch are eligible for the match but will not be matched at a full-year value
