OURSELVES, OUR SOULS AND BODIES:

A PASTORAL TEACHING ON SEXUALITY AND MARRIAGE

Beloved in Christ,

Bishop Martins has written a pastoral letter and teaching for the people and clergy of the Diocese of Springfield. The letter may be found here:

I commend it to you and ask that you please carefully read what the bishop has shared. Those of you active on Facebook and elsewhere may have already encountered the letter.

I recognize that there are many thoughts and feelings on what the bishop has written, and I ask that as we read this letter together we do so prayerfully and charitably. Whether you find yourself in agreement or disagreement with the teaching and position of the bishop, we each do well to remember that he is our chief pastor, priest, and teacher. As our bishop, he is called to guard the faith and the flock, and this letter is an exercise of that ministry in our diocese and in the midst of difficult times.

Though the impact of this teaching on day to day life here at Trinity may be minimal, it is important that we consciously engage in the ministry of faithfully preaching and teaching Christ in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County, and to the ends of the earth. The Gospel which we have received and which we proclaim does not change. Its truth endures from day to day and from age to age.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever (Hebrews 13:8).

Thanks be to God.

BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12
9:30 AM

God has called us to be stewards of his creation, overseers not only of the earth and plants but caretakers of the creatures as well. Throughout time, we know that the animals a family raises truly become a part of the family.

Saturday morning, October 12, we will have our Blessing of the Animals here at the church. In that service, we remember the call God gave to our first parents even as we enjoy the present role which our beloved animals play in our lives.

So bring all of your family members out, and don't forget your human relations either. It will be a time of prayer and blessing as we celebrate the beauty of all creatures of our God and king. And remember, this is a great opportunity to invite friends and their pets, too!

PARISH NOTICES

St. Anne's Guild Meeting:  The Guild will meet Tuesday, October 8, at noon in the Parish Hall.

St. Anne's Guild Offering:  In the fall, we take up an offering to support the St. Anne’s Guild and their ministry among us. Envelopes are available at the back of the church for the next couple of weeks. Please give generously as you are able.

Parish Prayer List:  Please take a look so we can pray intentionally for each name on the list. Can someone be moved off our prayer list? Do you know someone we should add?

Altar Flowers and Coffee Hour:  With the end of summer and the start of the school year, it's a good time to take a moment to check out the altar flowers and coffee hour signup sheets. These are important ministries to our ongoing life together.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

Hear, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest

October 6, 2019 - Proper 22, Year C

The Collect:  Proper 22

Almighty and everlasting God, who art always more ready to hear than we to pray, and art wont to give more than either we desire or deserve: Pour down upon us the abundance of thy mercy, forgiving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lesson:  Habakkuk 1:1-6,12-13,2:1-4

The oracle of God which Habakkuk the prophet saw. O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and thou wilt not hear? Or cry to thee “Violence!” and thou wilt not save? Why dost thou make me see wrongs and look upon trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law is slacked and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous, so justice goes forth perverted. Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. For lo, I am rousing the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, who march through the breadth of the earth, to seize habitations not their own. Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. O Lord, thou hast ordained them as a judgment; and thou, O Rock, hast established them for chastisement. Thou who art of purer eyes than to behold evil and canst not look on wrong, why dost thou look on faithless men, and art silent when the wicked swallows up the man more righteous than he? I will take my stand to watch, and station myself on the tower, and look forth to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint. And the Lord answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain upon tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seem slow, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Behold, he whose soul is not upright in him shall fail, but the righteous shall live by his faith.”

The Psalm:  37:3-10

3   Put your trust in the LORD and do good; * dwell in the land and feed on its riches.
4   Take delight in the LORD, * and he shall give you your heart's desire.
5   Commit your way to the LORD and put your trust in him, * and he will bring it to pass.
6   He will make your righteousness as clear as the light * and your just dealing as the noonday.
7   Be still before the LORD * and wait patiently for him.
8   Do not fret yourself over the one who prospers, * the one who succeeds in evil schemes.
9   Refrain from anger, leave rage alone; * do not fret yourself; it leads only to evil.
10   For evildoers shall be cut off, * but those who wait upon the LORD shall possess the land.

The Epistle:  2 Timothy 1:6-14

I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-control. Do not be ashamed then of testifying to our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel in the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not in virtue of our works but in virtue of his own purpose and the grace which he gave us in Christ Jesus ages ago, and now has manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, and therefore I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus; guard the truth that has been entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us.

The Gospel:  Luke 17:5-10

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” And the Lord said, “If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this sycamine tree, ‘Be rooted up, and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. “Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down at table’? Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink’? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’”

PRAYER OF THE DAY

OCTOBER 4:  ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

Most high, omnipotent, good Lord, grant unto thy people grace to renounce gladly the vanities of this world; that, following the way of blessed Francis, we may for love of thee delight in thy whole creation with perfectness of joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
