The News: RBA cuts rates to 0.75%

On Tuesday, the RBA set the cash rate to 0.75 percent, a historic low. Following this, interest rates are expected to be close to zero, an attempt at jumpstarting the struggling economy, Australia’s GDP growth rate last quarter was at an extremely weak 0.5 per cent, continuing a trend of low growth over the last few quarters.

The expansionary stance in monetary policy is an attempt to keep employment high, economic prosperity of Australia high, and the dollar at a stable level. Australia’s unemployment rate sits at a sustainable 5.3 per cent (as of August 2019), however that number has been steadily creeping over the months. However, the Australian dollar has been experiencing relatively low levels of inflation, last quarter a 1.6% inflation rate.

With these metrics in mind, the RBA has determined expansionary monetary policy necessary to rejuvenate Australia’s struggling economy. Australia’s consumption levels have been significantly lower than in previous years, with the NSW retail sector feeling the squeeze.

The lower interest rates is good news for mortgage holders, creating savings of 0.2 per cent. However, it is no good for savers. There will be effectively no interest on big bank accounts.

It is expected that the RBA will continue cutting interest rates as necessary. A low of 0.25 per cent is expected by February next year.

Meet the Team!

HR Director: Mike Xi

Hobbies: I’m a big fan of learning languages, I have a dream that one day I will be able to finally master the trio of East Asian languages, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. I’m working on it every day!

Best part about being director: As a HR Director, my favourite part has been watching everyone in the society get closer with one another and create some great memories. It’s also been a huge pleasure of mine to have gotten to know each member of the society, whether they be subcom, director or executive.

Funniest AccSoc Memory: There’s honestly been too many funny memories, but I think the funniest would have been the ‘Shower Boys’ thing at two of our road trips. Also watching Harry from IT when he’s drunk is always something to laugh about.

IT Director: Zac Richmond

Hobbies: I enjoy working on a few programming projects of mine that help me practise and refine my coding skills. Best part about being director!

The best part about being a director: Being able to guide and lead your Subcom to help them achieve their goals. Being able to witness them grow and develop their skills throughout the year is a very rewarding experience.

Funniest AccSoc Memory: My funniest AccSoc memory is when we were at our director road trip and we all randomly decided to jump in the freezing pool at 2am in the morning.
