LE WAGON

I’ve known Le Wagon since their beginnings as a startup and although it was on my list to one day do at least some workshops with them, here I am, having applied for a “Women’s Coding Day” and a few weeks later, I received the message “Congrats! You're in.”

It was an amazing day and yes, by the end of it I (almost) had my first landing page (with a lot of corrections to be done and a lot of help from the team; still I was very proud of “my very first landing page”). As a bonus, I met incredible people that I am looking forward to meeting again: one of my coding neighbours (Davi) works in visual effects (she modestly told me that she teaches visual effects, but when curiosity led me to look at what visual effects work might look like, here’s what I found about her career: ”Davi was Senior Compositor on ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Where The Wild Things Are’, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’ and ‘Australia’. She also composited the Davy Jones character for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest’ and the Hall of Prophecies sequence for ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’. Last but not least, Davi was also part of the incredible teams that worked on ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘The Matrix Revolutions’”. I had an “Wooooow” moment!

I had another “Wow!” moment when meeting another girl, Elena, with whom I shared an umbrella and discovered that we shared a passion for healthcare (her Linkedin says ‘GovTech, Consulting, Former UK Government Adviser’). It all made me wish I could know the story of every single girl in the room, so hopefully Le Wagon will help us connect further.

I was really inspired by Le Wagon and I will apply to a part-time batch (a 24-week course; learning to code mostly for the mindset, I don’t intend to make a career change :). If you are also tempted to “start coding and change your life” with Le Wagon, here is a little movie of 3 alumni going from start to finish at the bootcamp:

BURNOUT

Burnout and chronic stress are topics that are particularly of interest for me and very close to my heart for both, professional and personal reasons. So close that, I am building a start up dedicated to personalised stress solutions. Several month ago I was also writing a blogpost about burnout.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that nearly every fifth child or teenager and every fourth adult will be affected by burnout at some point in his or her active life. The situation is so widespread in developed countries that the WHO has added burnout to its list of globally recognized diseases, defining it as a syndrome of “chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed” which “includes feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion, results in increased mental distance from one's job and reduced professional efficacy.

A Gallup poll of 7,500 full-time employees indicates that one in four employees feel burned out at work very often or always, while nearly half report feeling it sometimes. The trend seems particularly acute amongst the young. A Deloitte study on workplace health in the US suggests that 84% of millennials have experienced burnout in their current job. Women are more likely to suffer from the disease than their male counterparts.

Although the global economic burden of burnout has not been calculated, it is estimated that the global cost of mental illness will grow to $16 trillion by 2030, in part, owing to the increase in burnout.

Do you want to test your stress biology and avoid a burnout?

OBESITY and GUT HEALTH

In a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between body mass index and bowel habits, a team of physician-researchers at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center found a strong association between obesity and chronic diarrhea independent of an individual’s diet, lifestyle, psychological factors or medical conditions.

One possible explanation may be related to the link between obesity and chronic low-grade inflammation, which may contribute to diarrhea. Future research clarifying this relationship and determining how obesity triggers inflammation could serve as a base for how physicians approach treating abnormal bowel habits with this patient population.

AI DETECT HEART FAILURE WITH 100% ACCURACY

Led by researchers at the Universities of Surrey, Warwick and Florence, this study shows that AI can quickly and accurately identify CHF by analysing ONE electrocardiogram (ECG) heartbeat using convolutional neural networks (CNN), which are more effective for identifying patterns and structures in data.

Unlike existing methods that are often time-consuming and inaccurate, their model combines advanced signal processing and machine learning tools on raw ECG signals to improve detection rates dramatically.

Dr Sebastiano Massaro, associate professor of organizational neuroscience at the University of Surrey, said:  "First, by assessing ECG directly, we confirm that with AI it is possible to accurately detect CHF looking beyond heart rate variability analysis. Thus, we have in general results that are more adherent to the real behaviour of the affected heart.”

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
I stil have a lot of work these days, so I am stil not doing as many things for myself as I would like to at the moment (I was saying pretty much the same thing 2 weeks ago). Yes, stil having too much on my plate :), but this is real life, and although some call me a "stress specialist", I am pretty challenged on this side (somebody, somewhere in the clouds, might laugh at me, you want to solve stress, let's see how you take this, you're served!). So, I'm trying to navigate this period as best i can 'you'd notice, that you're receiving this Newsletter on Friday night and not Thursday, as usually, or that last week you didn't receive it al all. :) I am in late with my Podcast, but soon, you'll hear again from me also on iTunes, promise!).

What I am reading:

My personal experience

  • What I am reading: “Secrets of Sand Hill Road” by Scot Kupor (and still working on “Indistractable” by Nir Eyal;
  • What I am listening to:

1/podcastThe Energy Bluprint  ((thanks @Monicalascar for the advice): “Why Emotional Resilience, Confidence and Managing Negative Emotions are the secret keys to an amazing life with Dr Joan Rosenberg”

2/ music: for some reason, strangely I am in a classic music mood (strangely, because is not a passion for me, at least it wasn’t since last week). From instrumental music to opera and chorals, I love everything. Feeling bit dow? Traviata magically works for me! Need to focus, I go for Mozart :). In addition, I have all this on my phone (I am using iDaggio app)

3/ learning: since a while, I am playing with the app My Py to learn coding; as you heard before, I also had a one day workshop with Le Wagon, so I have some fun with that, I really like it!

4/ relaxing: I must say that my favourite place in London to relax is going to Bulgari Spa and having a massage with Chris (he has magic hands). And only chilling alongside their amazing pool, has a special calming effect on me. This week, I've decided to work from the Spa, I must say that I didn't finally worked as hard as I've planned, but it was great to allow me this pleasure in the middle of the week. I remember that someone who didn't know me said: "you're lucky, you have a nice boss letting you do this" and I answered, men, I am the boss :)It reminded a phrase from a Medium blog post, that " It’s time we flip the narrative. The way we help women rise is to shift the perception of what a female founder is — she’s not a girlboss, she’s the boss". Oh, yeah! 😉
