Quaker History in the 10th Month

Celebrate William Penn's 375th Birthday this Friday, October 18, 430-6 PM at City Hall. See painting by Benjamin West -Treaty of Penn with the Indians, 1772 depicting the site of Penn Treaty Park and the legendary Treaty of Shackamaxon with the Lenni Lenapi people.

On October 27, 1659 Puritans persecute Quakers in BostonMary Dyer, a convinced Quaker, is granted a last minute reprieve- but in 1660 she is executed for being Quaker. 

Aside: Mmmh. I'm re-thinking the whole 'fun facts' idea, what with the colonialism, genocide, misogyny and hate crimes. On the other hand, maybe October is the perfect season for some gallows humour..... get it? Okay. Not funny. Next! ...

Co-sponsored by CPMM. Learn about the Israeli and Palestinian combatants who laid down their weapons in 2006 and established Combatants for Peace, a Nobel Peace Prize Nominee in 2017 and 2018. Discussion: A Quaker Behind the Dream: Charlie Walker

Brenda Walker Beadenkopf, author of a new book about her father, Charlie Coates Walker (1920-2004), shares insights of a renowned Quaker activist in the Civil Rights and Peace Movements. Walker trained many people, including George Lakey, using role playing techniques to prepare for nonviolent direct actions, which are as relevant now as they were during the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer Project.

Releasing Ministry Alliance is helping to offer complimentary Introductions to Faithfulness Groups this October and November (see flyer for details).

This October, join Marcelle Martin and others via Zoom video conference to learn about faithfulness groups – a practice to support individual spiritual led callings and ministries.

October is Bible Study: The Last Supper in the Gospel of John.  We'll read aloud and compare John 13 to the gospel of Mark using the Friendly Bible Study method of asking queries of the passage. Friends are invited to bring their favorite translation of the Bible (optional). Please RSVP with John Gallery jagphila@mac.com so there is enough refreshments! 

Secretary Job Opening
MMFP has a current opening for a part-time secretary/assistant. This requires about 4 to 6 hours weekly, and preferably someone with Word, Excel and mail merge fluency. Please click on the link for more information.
