REFORMATION DAY (OBSERVED)

The Son of God Has Set Us Free from Sin and Death by His Grace

“Wisdom is justified by her deeds” (Matt. 11:19), and the true Wisdom of God, Christ Jesus, the incarnate Son, justifies us by His deeds. He prepares His way by the preaching of repentance, but He has suffered the violence of the Law and voluntarily handed Himself over to violent men, that we might eat and drink with Him in His Kingdom and “remain in the house forever” (John 8:35). For He is “a friend of tax collectors and sinners” (Matt. 11:19), and He has rescued us by His grace from the slavery of sin and death. By the proclamation of His eternal Gospel “to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people” (Rev. 14:6), “the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law” (Rom. 3:21), “that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Rom. 3:26). And by hearing the Gospel of Christ Jesus, “whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith” (Rom. 3:25), “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

Abundant Blessings

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”   Ephesians 3:20-21

One of the challenges we have as human beings is being able to see things the way God sees things. We simply do not have the capacity to do so. When it comes to our blessings, God delights in exceeding expectations and in pouring out mercies in abundance. This truth stands in stark contrast to our human fears about lacking what we need for ‘this body and life.’ Too often we submit to a ‘poverty mentality.’ Yet we have been abundantly blessed by God who has proven His love for us on the cross. How could we not trust Him? How could we not respond to His love with thanksgiving and generosity toward His mission in the Church? How could we not have a desire to imitate Him in blessing others?

Consider what this means within our own life. No doubt, as a faithful supporter of your church, you give annual offerings, but what happens when you die? The opportunity to continue supporting your church occurs within your Will through a legacy gift. If you have never considered how valuable a gift can be, just think of the impact not having your weekly offerings might have on the work of your congregation. To learn more about how you can establish a charitable end-of-life gift, please contact your regional Gift Coordinator or visit Lutheran Foundation Canada’s website at www.lutherafoundation.ca.
