Ebrill 2019

Helo bawb, cyflwyniad bach i ddechrau…

Fi yw Sadia, intern newydd Warp a llais misol yr e-bwletin. Efallai eich bod wedi fy ngweld o gwmpas; ‘Dwi’n artist a chyhoeddwr celf annibynnol yma yng Nghaerdydd sydd yn golygu bod gweithio yn g39 (a chael bod mor agos at eu llyfrgell!) ychydig mwy cyffrous. Gobeithio gwnaiff yr e-berthynas rhyngom dyfu dros y chwe mis nesaf.

Teimlaf fod yr interniaeth yma wedi dod ar yr adeg gywir. ‘Dwi wastad wedi bod yn awyddus i wybod am y wahanol fodelau sydd yn cael ei arwain gan artistiaid, yn enwedig y ffordd maent yn dod i’r amlwg mewn dinas fel Caerdydd. Ydyn ni’n dilyn modelau Ewropeaidd, ydyn nhw wedi’i seilio ar ddeialog, faint mae’r llefydd hyn cael eu rheoli gan y gymuned? Pethau tebyg. Mae 2019 yn edrych yn debyg bydd yma ailymddangosiad o ofodau sy’n cael ei arwain gan artistiaid. Mae Arcade/Campfa yn parhau i arwain prosiectau preswyl, Mae Shift yn archwilio posibiliadau am ofod seler gwych, a bydd cymdeithas g39, sy’n dechrau yn fuan, yn gwahodd artistiaid i gyfnod preswyl wedi ei wasgaru dros bum mlynedd.  Mae pethau’n teimlo’n fwy hyblyg yn ddiweddar – mae’r Gwanwyn ar ddod.

Efallai fe’ch gwelaf o gwmpas yn un o’r nifer ddigwyddiadau yn ystod y Gwanwyn, ac efallai y medrwn drafod y tymhorau ymhellach. ‘Dwi’n gynhyrfus am waith Freya Dooley ( y sesiwn wrando gan Synaptic Island yn benodol) a’r holl ddigwyddiadau Gŵyl Diffusion. Fedrwn ailgynnull dros goffi yn y Clwb Brecwast ym mis Mai.

Braf eich cyfarfod,

Sadia

October 2019

Hi everyone, just a little introduction to begin with…

I’m Tess, the new Warp intern and the voice behind your e-bulletins for the next 6 months. I've been rummaging around Cardiff for a good while working in various places. One of which being The Gate; I have been curating and coordinating their exhibitions for the last 2-3 years. However, now I am working at a refugee centre (Oasis Cardiff) and Warp/g39 while working on my own practice as a photographic artist and freelancer. I am hoping to learn as much as I can about the art world in Cardiff as I feel I have only just begun my journey and I am excited to continue it with my relationship with you and Warp/g39.

I feel extremely lucky to have been given this opportunity, especially during a time when Cardiff's art scene seems to be flourishing across many areas. There are so many creative spaces, groups and communities working towards providing opportunities and supporting artists and creatives. It feels very exciting, even if it is that time of year when you're likely to slip over a wet leaf or get a soggy foot from stepping on a loose pavement tile (both have happened to me already, I'm not quite over it yet).

I hope to meet some of you soon maybe during the Made in Roath open exhibition or even at our Soup Group which is every Saturday from 12pm - 2pm, I am vegan and I love cooking, so do expect some tasty vegan soupy treats!

Thats all from me for now, hopefully I will meet some e-bulletin readers soon!

Best,

Tess

Devised by artists for artists, the UNITe 2019 season is an autumn/winter programme of artistic experimentation, research, discussions, film, talks and presentations, and more.

Taking inspiration from independent art schools, studio groups and other ways that artists get together to support each other, g39’s UNITe season transforms the exhibition venue into a shared artist studio space and communal hub.

UNITe studio community fosters and supports artists at any career stage. It is a space for artistic practice and its associated research, testing ideas, taking wrong turns, sharing ideas, serendipity, and discovery.
During UNITe 2019 we are supporting eight artists through our intense programme. This year the artists are Daniel Clark, Mylo Elliott, Sophie Lindsey, Natasha MacVoy, Amber Mottram, Manon Parry, Radha Patel and Tessa Waite. The artists are encouraged to contribute to the programme supporting each other as a peer group.

The public are welcome to visit and we will be open our usual hours Wednesday - Saturday. There is also a series of free public talks and events (see the calendar below).
We invite the public in to witness the often-unseen studio activity of artistic practice and take part in the conversations that emerge from this.

By bringing audiences and artists together in this way we want to promote an understanding of where visual art comes from. Whatever the context and wherever the situation – the studio, the workshop, the library, the laptop, urban or rural – are all places of production that are usually kept separate from the gallery environment.

UNITe 2019 concludes with an open studio event, led by the artists to see what they have been doing and to celebrate well into the final hours of the residency.

g39 - Made in Roath Open

Mae Rumblestrip yn dod â gwaith chwe artist ynghyd, sy’n rhoi'r argraff bod rhywbeth yn mynd o chwith, bod arwyddion y dylem fod yn rhoi sylw iddynt. Dônt o hyd i'r gwahaniaethau rhwng canlyniad ac effaith, a gwneir cysylltiad rhwng pethau sydd wedi digwydd, pethau sydd yn digwydd a phethau sydd eto i ddod. Maent yn dod â chynsail a rhagfynegiant at ei gilydd, y gorffennol na ellir ei gyffwrdd a'r dyfodol ansicr, gan dynnu sylw at arwyddion bod pethau ar fin newid, a bod llwybrau amgen i'r rhai yr ydym yn eu troedio ar hyn o bryd.

'Rumble-strip' yw’r llinell o baent trumog ar ymyl traffordd, a’i diben yw rhybuddio gyrwyr o berygl, i ddihuno gyrwyr cysglyd ac i atal damweiniau. Mae'n rhybudd, yn sŵn, yn wahaniaeth sy’n tynnu sylw at wyriad, a newid mewn cyfeiriad.

Mae argoelion a rhagarwyddion yn dibynnu ar batrymau, ar ein tybiaethau ynghylch achos ac effaith, dymuniad i ddod o hyd i drefn a gwneud rhagfynegiadau. Mae'r rhagamcaniad hwn yn rhan o oroesi - ffordd o wneud synnwyr o ansicrwydd y dyfodol. Rydym bob amser yn edrych am y cyswllt rhwng pethau, neu’n eu trefnu yn ôl achos ac effaith, hyd yn oed pan fo'r dystiolaeth yn ein harwain i edrych yn rhywle arall.

Bu’r artistiaid canlynol yn rhan o arddangosfa:
Rhagweliad: 6 -9yp; 3 Mai, 2019
Arddangofsa: 4 Mai - 14 Gorffennaf 2019

Gan ddechrau yn g39, mae'r daith yn 27 milltir a gall cerddwyr ymuno a chamu allan ar hyd y llwybr. Eleni bydd trip i’r ffynhonnau poeth yn Ffynnon Taf ac egwyl ym Mynwent y Crynwyr. Richard Bowers: Sunlight and Dirt - Shift

1 Hydref - 31 Hydref 2019 // 1st October - 31st October 2019

Richard Bowers
will be based at Shift throughout October working on a Arts council Wales funded project, Sunlight and Dirt

Richard will use sound recording, composition and arrangement, video and architectural installation, to explore aspects of time and memory; of what constitutes our perception of self and of the elements of our personal history that elude our memories as we age; of identity as seen through our own memories and through the perceptions of others transmitted to us over time. Sunlight and Dirt brings forward images and sounds – creative and documentary  – into a stylised replica of a room in the artists childhood home.

Throughout the research period at Shift, Richard will have open studio days sharing his process and the developing project.

The Place I Call Home - Ffotogallery

6 Hydref - 1 Rhagfyr 2019 // 24th October - 21st December 2019

Mae’n bleser mawr gan Ffotogallery eich gwahodd i ddangosiad cyntaf The Place I Call Home, yng nghartref newydd Ffotogallery yn Cathays, Caerdydd.

Ar ôl bod ar ymweliad cwmpasu i bob un o chwe gwlad Cyngor Cydweithredol y Gwlff, penderfynodd y curadur ar ddull a gweledigaeth yr arddangosfa a chomisiynodd nifer o artistiaid wedi’u seilio ym Mhrydain a’r Dwyrain Canol i gynhyrchu gwaith oedd yn ymateb i’w themâu. Mae’r artistiaid a ddetholwyd yn adlewyrchu cydbwysedd mewn oedran, rhyw a phrofiad proffesiynol, yn ogystal â chynrychioli pob un o chwe gwlad Cyngor Cydweithredol y Gwlff. Mewn amrywiol ffyrdd, mae gwaith yr artistiaid a ddewiswyd yn ymwneud â rhannu straeon am ddiwylliant a threftadaeth, am herio stereoteipiau, ac am archwilio hunaniaethau, elfennau cyffredin a gwahaniaethau.
____________________________________________________________________________________

Ffotogallery are delighted to invite you to the Welsh premiere of The Place I Call Home, at Ffotogallery's new home in Cathays, Cardiff. This cross-cultural exhibition, commissioned by the British Council and curated by David Drake, Director of Ffotogallery, presents the work of 15 artists, each using photography to explore the idea of home through the experiences of people living in the Gulf and the UK at a time of rapid change and social mobility.

After scoping visits to all six GCC countries, curator for the project and Director of Ffotogallery David Drake determined the vision and approach for the exhibition and commissioned several UK and Middle East based artists to produce work responding to its themes. The selected artists reflect a balance of age, gender and professional experience, as well as representation of all six GCC countries. In various ways, the work of the selected artists is about sharing stories of culture and heritage, challenging stereotypes, exploring identities, commonalities and differences.

Garth Evans: But, Hands Have Eyes - Chaper Arts Centre

14 Medi - 26 Ionawr 2019 // 14th September - 26th January 2019

Mae gwaith Garth Evans yn ganolog i hanes cerflunwaith Prydain. Mae ei arfer wedi’i ddiffinio i raddau helaeth gan ei ddefnydd o ffurfiau geometrig ac anghymesur, a’i ymrwymiad i ddeunyddiau syml bob dydd. Mae Garth yn adnabyddus am greu gwaith sy’n pontio rhwng moderniaeth y chwedegau a’r gwaith telynegol a ddilynodd a oedd yn arbrofi ag ystod ehangach o ddeunyddiau.

Drwy arbrofi â photensial maint, pwysau, cyfrwng a ffurf, mae Garth yn ymdrin â’i waith mewn modd ffurfiol a chysyniadol. Mae diddordeb ganddo mewn herio ffiniau sefydledig, ac o ganlyniad caiff ei gerfluniau eu creu o amrywiaeth o ddeunyddiau, gan gynnwys serameg, dur, lledr a ffibr gwydrog. Yn ôl
Garth, mae llawer o’i waith, hyd yn oed ar ei fwyaf haniaethol, yn ‘sbarduno ac yn cynnwys atgofion penodol’. Yn y pen draw, mae gwaith Garth Evans yn amwys, yn aml-wynebog ac yn hollol wreiddiol.

Mae’r arddangosfa yma, sef arddangosfa gyntaf Garth yng Nghymru ers y saithdegau, yn cynnwys gweithiau o’r chwedegau hyd heddiw.
____________________________________________________________________________________

The work of Garth Evans is integral to the history of British sculpture. His practice has largely been defined by the use of geometric, asymmetrical forms and a commitment to simple, everyday materials. Evans is noted for a body of work that offers a bridge between 1960s modernism and the lyrical experimentation with a broader range of materials that followed.

Experimenting with the potential of scale, weight, medium and form, Evans' work comprises both a formal and conceptual approach. He is always interested in interrogating established boundaries and, as a result, his sculptures are made from a diverse range of materials including ceramics, steel, leather and fibreglass. Evans states that many of his works, even when most abstract, are 'triggers for, and containers of, particular identifiable memories'. Ultimately, Garth Evans' works are ambiguous, multi-faceted and completely original.

This exhibition, Evans’ first in Wales since the 1970s, features works from the 1960s to the present day.
