GeoBeer #29 Review and Save-the-Date for #30

Hi GeoBeer Friends!

On October 3rd, we had a fantastic GeoBeer #29 in Herisau with our newest sponsor and host, the GEOINFO IT AG's Geo-Solutions unit! We met for our east-most GeoBeer yet at a nice location in Herisau, close to the local ice-rink.

After ushering the crowd inside and waiting for slightly belated arrivals due to train problems, we could start the evening with a brief intro and the Welcome Note by Rolf Eugster of GEOINFO.

First up in lightning talks, was Marco Forrer of Labcom. He talked to us about GIS in agriculture. "Benötigt ein Landwirt GIS?" – turns out, very much yes! And with the right tools, it's an easy skill to master. Our second presenter was GEOINFO's Bruno Schäpper. He spoke about his experience with open source components such as PostGIS, Open Layers and Geoserver in building geoportals.

After these engaging talks, it was already time for the apéro riche and inspired discussions around the talks and other topics. We even got to taste, besides many other delicious things, craft beer from Herisau (with participation by Marco)!

We enjoyed the evening in Herisau very much and want to extend our thanks to our sponsor, GEOINFO's Geo-Solutions, and specifically the organising team around Christine Kalberer, Miriam Christen, Ingolf Jung and Rolf Eugster as well as our two great speakers, Marco Forrer and Bruno Schäpper!

Head over to our website to relive the evening and check out the slides. Additionally to our social media-based review, we host an image gallery kindly supplied by the GEOINFO team (thank you!).

GeoBeer #30: Save-the-Date

We're about to reach another round anniversary with the GeoBeer event series, because: GeoBeer #30 is around the corner! We will meet rather far from Herisau, namely in Yverdon at the HEIG-VD, courtesy of the team around Jens Ingensand! We're excited to return to the Suisse Romande for what promises to be an outstanding event. GeoBeer #30 will take place on Thursday, November 28. Mark your calendriers!

We will refine our plans together with our host and sponsor, set up the registration page and get back to you all in time. Stay tuned!

Until then, why not check out this video of renowned security researcher Bruce Schneier positing that we need (to be) public interest technologists? In the words of BoingBoing: "Law school grads routinely go to work for crusading nonprofits and even those in private practice do pro bono work, thanks to a widespread understanding that lawyers have a professional duty to work for the public interest (...) Bruce Schneier wants us to think about becoming "public interest technologists,' who work for the public good, by advising lawmakers and policymakers, and by pursuing public interest goals in our technical work."

Bruce Schneier: "We need technologists in all aspects of public interest work, informing policy, creating tools, building the future. We need people who can speak tech to power and we need them now."

That's it, from us, for now.
Talk to you soon – over and out!

–Stephan, Anne, and Ralph
