The Ghost Dance
(extract)
In one of the dances’ an unfortunate Indian, who had enjoyed the coveted vision, when he. had recovered consciousness cried as if his heart would break. He had seen the "Messiah," who told him to return to earth because he had not brought along his wife and child. The child had died two years before and the impossibility of obeying the command put him into the most complete despair. In a telegram from Pine Ridge it is related that in a recent dance one of the warriors was to go into a trance for four days, and then return to life as a buffalo. The tribe was then to kill the buffalo, and every Indian who did not eat a piece would turn into a dog. The buck who was to be transformed into the buffalo and thus be eaten is said to have offered himself a willing sacrifice. These untutored Indians are full of superstitions and believe anything “medicine man" tells them. At the Cheyenne Agency recently one of these prophets announced that on the previous day he had been visited by several persons who had been a long time dead, and who brought him a piece of buffalo meat. The Indians love buffalo meat, but have seen none of it for several years. The prophet told them he would feed them with the buffalo meat that had been brought to him. .The following night a circle was formed, and the prophet stepped into the centre with a dish full of cooked meat. There was a dance, and then one after another the dancers filed up and each was given a piece of the meat. Although they were many, and the pieces few, yet there were enough to go round. The "medicine man" was a magician and up in all the tricks of sleight of hand, yet he attributed it all to the coming of the red man's "Messiah." The craze seems to have spread throughout the Western plains, and the "ghost dance" goes on in a hundred places, the Sioux having carried it even over the northern border into Canada. (end)
The Ghost Dance was a late addition to Native American belief systems, appearing around 1890. It was believed that the ritual dance would help restore the old way of life before the arrival of the Europeans. The dance promised the return of the buffalo and communication with the spirits of the dead. Although the Ghost Dance was peaceful, army authorities outlawed its performance.

Bison producers hunt for wagon trek painting
Western Producer
Twenty “artist's proof” editions were made of The Last Great Buffalo Wagon Trek as well as 200 limited edition prints, but Bison Producers of Alberta has lost track of the original.
It’s a bit of a bison mystery. An original oil painting created after a wagon trek held in 2000, in conjunction with the International Bison Conference, has gone missing. |

The Senate passed its first resolution honoring National Bison Day, which was also supported by various tribal groups, Wildlife Conservation Society and various bison ranchers.
This is how abandoning the herd can make you successful. When storms brew out of western Colorado, cows turn east to outrun them. The only problem is that cows are notoriously slow. They plod along in vain, trying to outrun the clouds and rain. Unfortunately, the storm soon overtakes them and they are soaked beneath the pelting sheets of rain.

National Bison Association
Pet Food Companies Urged to Become Partners in Restoration
Pet food manufacturers, retailers and suppliers attending a sustainability conference in Boulder on Thursday were urged to join with bison marketers as Partners in Bison Restoration.
NBA Executive Director Dave Carter provided a TED-style talk to the 175 people attending the Pet Sustainability Coalition’s annual Impact Unleashed conference, a gathering which encourages pet product companies to improve their environmental and social practices in all phases of their business. Carter’s talk focused on the important role that companion animals, and their owners can play in helping restore bison herds across North America.
The NBA sponsored an evening social at the conference on Wednesday evening, and attendees enjoyed a Thursday luncheon with tender tips donated by Rocky Mountain Natural Meats.
The NBA’s participation in Impact Unleashed was underwritten by the association’s Growth Fund.
A Note from NBA President, Dick Gehring
From The President's Report from the Tuesday NBA Board Teleconference
"Last month has been a busy time for all. Especially Dave and Jim. Hats off for another successful venture to Capitol Hill. This year was exceptionally successful from my perspective. We continue to receive smiles when we walk into the rooms, see familiar faces, and comments or questions like, What’s on your mind this year in a tone that indicates they are already engaged before we speak. As all of you know that hasn’t happened by accident.
We saw many positive responses, on the labeling issue and others. We also planted some seeds that I hope to bird dog and see to fruition that can mean value added to our members and dollars to our coffers. Thanks to all of you that were on the trip and to those we tagged to be there. It is so important to continue the good work and present our best foot forward.
We have a lot more coming at us in the future so we can’t let off the gas. We need to begin to formulate a plan for fake meat and other items. As much as the labeling issue has had the ability to damage our industry, fake meat has the ability to cripple us. We can’t take this lightly.
