Lebanese protests continue

  • Upwards of ten thousand people flooded the streets of Beirut Sunday, marking the fourth consecutive day of anti-government protests
  • Demonstrations began late Thursday evening following a proposed tax on WhatsApp calls, an app that is widely used within the country and throughout the middle east. The tax was seen by many as another way to hurt the lower class, who already face economic pressure
  • Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri now faces both a mounting pressure to deliver a series of economic reforms and increasing cries for his resignation

World’s longest non-stop commercial flight finishes testing

  • Australian airline Qantas successfully flew a commercial airplane carrying 49 people from New York to Sydney - a nineteen and a half hour flight spanning 10,200 miles
  • The flight reportedly releases less carbon into the atmosphere than a two-legged trip, with Qantas executives claiming that the majority of carbon output occurs during takeoff. Qantas hopes to utilize long-haul flights across the globe by 2050

Nintendo Switch hits 15 million units sold in North America

  • The Nintendo Switch reached 15 million units sold in North America, with the hybrid console expected to continue solid sale numbers through the holiday season
  • The Switch’s predecessor, the Wii U, only sold 13.56 million units in its entire lifetime worldwide. The Switch’s worldwide numbers currently sit at 36.87 million units sold in just under three years
More context: the original wii is Nintendo’s best selling console and has sold nearly 102 million globally

High school coach disarms student

  • Coach Keanon Lowe was called to a classroom and was met with a student carrying a loaded shotgun. In quick action, Lowe grabbed the gun and embraced the would-be shooter, Angel Granados-Diaz, holding him until police arrived
  • It was later discovered that Granados-Diaz intended to commit suicide at school so that his mother wouldn't find his body. The incident took place May 17 at Parkrose High School, but the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office did not release the video until Friday after court proceedings were completed

POLITICS 🏛️

Trump’s resort won't host G7 summit

  • President Trump abruptly changed plans, stating that next year’s G7 summit of global powers will no longer be held at Trump National in Doral, Florida as announced previously. The change came after two days of bipartisan backlash over the possibility that Trump might profit off the event
  • Despite the change, Trump claims  "I thought I was doing something very good for our Country by using Trump National Doral, in Miami, for hosting the G-7 Leaders"

SPORTS 

Astros walk-off Yankees to set World Series matchup

  • Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning in game 6 of the ALCS, sending the Astros to the World Series with a 4-2 series win
  • The Astros will enter the championship series as favorites against National League champions the Washington Nationals, who swept the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 in the NLCS. The World Series will begin Tuesday in Houston
